So I'm sitting at the gas station and while waiting for the guy to come fuel my car - since I'm an Oregonian and obviously can't figure out how to do it myself - I still had the key in the ignition to listen to the radio. I opened the glove box and noticed that the little light was hanging down. No prob, I will fix it when I get home, but for now just shove it right back into the slot and close the glove box carefully... ...well, the edge of the light contact grounded out on the metal edge of the glove box and I heard a tick-tick and all my dash lights went out. Fuse? Oh-well, I will pull that when I get home too. I then notice that not only are all my dash lights out, but so is the bell that tells me my lights are on when I get out of the car, and so is the rear work lamp - which is tapped into the parking lights. The switch for the work lamp is a factory switch that is also hooked up to the dash lights, but does not dim. My headlights DO come on, but there is no warning bell. And the 10A fuse that is supposed to be for the dash lights is still good, I even replaced it, and I still get no lights!! Any hints? And if not, where should I start looking for the problem now?? http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

R.B. Oh man, I hope yours is going to be easier than mine. I had the same lights out. On mine that 10A fuse kept going out and I kept replacing it. Well one day the lights went out but the fuse was still good. I tried to figure it out but I'm no good at electrical. I ened up taking it to the that Land Rover repair shop on 10th and Powell right before the ross island bridge. It was in the shop for 2 weeks. The guy seemed to have a really hard time figuring it out. He ended up replacing the turn signal stalk and repairing a couple of shorts. At home I looked over what he did and there was some "creative wiring" in the fuse box. Oh well, at least it works now. It cost me $520. Not that much considering the part was $200 and labor is $70 per hour, but it still hurts. I sure hope you have an easier time with yours. Start by making sure the bulb in the glove box is good. If its blown replace it. Then check all the fuses under the dash, not just the one for the dash lights. I mean really check every single one. Sometimes the most random fuse will go. Other than that I wish you luck. Dan |

Almost forgot. Check your rear tail lights they are probably out as well. If you do drive at night make sure you turn on the rear fog lights so people can see you. |

I wonder if the glove box light has to be grounded to make the dash lights work? I can't remember for sure, but the mounting screw for the glove box light may be the ground. |

I had the same problem and it was a brake light out.. Apparently the brake lights are wired in a way so that if one goes out, you get notified by having the dash lights not work.. As soon as I replaced the bulb the dash lights worked fine. |

All those things sound very similar, but mine turned out to be different - but connected in some way... I did short the thing out by touching the light to the metal in the glove box. That is all I could figure happened, so I was perplexed when I looked at the dash light fuse and found it intact. It was at this time that the baby started crying and I had to come in and call it quits. But I thought about it for a while and looked at the book. Still didn't help. What finally tipped me off is that the head lights worked, but the parking lights did not, and since my work light is patched into the parking lights it would not work either - I realized I was looking at the wrong fuses, but I still didn't know which ones, and didn't have time to go pulling fuses and looking at each one. Untill I had to make a trip to Costco, which takes me past Ship's Mechanical - one of my favorite haunts, and Mike actually had a Disco in last week with the same set of lights out. Dan and Richard, it is interesting that you said that about the rear lights because the situation in that car was that it had been hit from behind just enough to short out one of the rear lights and they had the same problem I had. He knew what fuses it was, replaced the two parking fuses and it was fine. I will remember to take the key out and turn the lights off when I fiddle with a bulb next time - sheesh. Dan, is that the place with the guy who has the Series Rover that is so done up that it is no longer a Series Rover - more like a dune buggy with rainbow colors - I don't really trust that guy - Tim is his name I think. But I have not been down to his shop yet. Or is that the LabRover.com shop? |

I had a similar problem with my 95 Disco, all the dash lights inside the car did not work, the rear parking lights did not work either, but my main beam lights worked???. Question- Do your low beam lights work? I don't have a solution for you, if they do not work than I will suggest in getting a new switch for the ligths, the entire assembly is requrired, well the assembly is the lever on the right hand side on US models that is. This assembly is easily installed and it cost around $100 at least mine did (not from the dealer though). Anyway, my problem was solved and I had not had any problems since. One thing to note about pulling all your fuses, be carefull with the ABS fuse it's the one encased by that yellow thing inside the fuse box. This fuse can actually cause a short and cause the SRS light to come on permanently, so be carefull with the fuse box. |

RB Just bought a 98 Disco I that has the same light issues. I'd be thrilled if you could remember exactly what fuses were replaced to fix the problem. I've been all over the fuse box, and can't seem to find the right one. Thanks Matt |

Guys I had a similar thread going...ended up being the headlight switch. seems these go very easily. I just broke about 96k so apparently they go often. it was a super easy fix ( thanks to a bunch of fellow dwebbers) and you cant imagine what is tied in to the switch. I had no taillights, no hgeadlights or parking lights, or glove box light...though I had highbeams if i pulled the stick back like I was flashing them. I drove from Maine to Boston saunday like that. UGH! call aaronauto.com---50 bucks shipped for the swithc assembly. easy to do and fixes the problem Joshua |

The dash lights, right hand side (parking) lights and headlight warning are all on the same cct (I didn't know about the glove box light) - the fuse is under the SRS fuse behind the drivers facia panel ( Oz disco ). Mine blows every time it rains heavily and one day I'll track down the short with the garden hose - one day. Bruce. |

I had the same problem and took it to the dealer, basically what they did was pull the glovebox light out and tape the circiut off, then I replaced the fuse and that was that. Once the glovebox light is removed the problem goes away. |

Check all the fuses first not just the one labeled. Update us on your progress |
