Currently in the process of refreshing bushings all around, steering components (box, bushings...). I removed the steering damper yesterday and it seems fine to me when I move it by hand (slow, steady translation). However, I did have sometime a bit of shimmy in the steering when hitting a hole on the highway. Any recommendation? How can I evaluate the damper condition (to delay the purchase of an expensive $100 bilstein)?

Try EE or Rovers North, the OME runs somewhere around $60-70. This is what my truck was doing and I repaced the damper and it was fixed.

Lionel, sounds like you're in the same boat as I am, in need of swivel preload setting, rather than a new dampener. At 190K, it is clearly time for a swivel preload adjustment.

Peace,
Paul

Paul,

Did a quick check of the swivel bearing play yesterday also. Lifted the car, tried to move the wheels and felt only a bit (1/4") on the right wheel, nothing on the left. However, that looks like a pretty dirty check. Any better way to confirm the need for swivel bearing preload adjustment?

The shimmy you described and your mileage are sufficient for my diagnosis. The 1/4" movement you found is excessive, there should be no discernible play in the front end.

Peace,
Paul
