50% of the time I hear a clunk near the drivers side wheel. This only happens when braking at slow speeds. Pulling into the driveway, garage, parking spots etc. If a tap the pedal a little harder it almost always clunks. At times it seems that I can feel it near my feet. Is this a cv joint, bushings? What should I check first?

Is it a click clunk sound? And is it right before you stop? I had this too. It was the break pads moving in the caliper. When I checked it out they had a 1/16-1/8" float front to rear. I put some CRC brake quiet on the backs of the pads and reassembled. No more click clunk.

Could be:
Universal joints-but I doubt it
Tie rod ends
Bushings
Shocks
brake pads floating around on the mounting pins

Just had the brakes checked. They were okay, so they said. The shocks are pretty much shot! it is a 96 with 90,000 still has originals. I am planning on replacing those in the next couple of weeks. What should I look at first?

Shocks, but you might also check the panhard rod bushings if it is only coming from the driver's side. And, at 90K, you probably ought to be putting new tie rod ends on now, along with universals if yours are still originals.

As for the bushings, I have seen them go away in as little as 50K, but also have seen them last into the high 100Ks.

W/R/T the brakes, they probably only checked them for amount of friction material. The Rover pads have a tremendous amount of play (to allow for heat-induced expansion from slowing a heavy truck running at near-super sonic speeds?) in the mounting holes, I doubt anyone would have checked, or noticed this aspect.

Peace,
Paul
