Check the rear suspension A frame ball joint for slack. This is often the cause of drive line clonks.

What idiot said get used to it !!!
Check the rear A frame ball joint,70% of "clonks" are to be cured here.
Also have a look at the trailing arm bushes,and if you have covered a lot of miles open up the round cover on the transfer box and check the gearbox main shaft for wear,but on a 96 it should be OK.

Gerard;

What exactly should we look for at the A frame ball joint? What to do if there is slack? Bring it to a shop or is there some adjusting that a layman can do?

thanks.

What you need to do is get a large pinch bar and lever it off the diff, it's hard to see the movement in the joint. Make sure that the car is on level ground and there is no load on the drive train. I have found that they are generally stuffed at 100000KM (50-60k miles)of on road use. Ball joints cost $60 Australian. Maxi-Drive make an adjustable/greaseable heavy duty one for $120. They are easy to change but can be difficult to remove from the forged housing. I find a bit of heat getts them out and you just press in a new one. Remember that there is lotts of things spinning around under these trucks so they always make a bit noise. This fault shows about more in Manual 5 speed cars,they clonk every time you left out the clutch. Ball joint is normally the trouble.
