Can anyone explain coil overs to me? Advantages and what is required to make them work? and how they work in relation to standard springs and shocks?

Whos truck is that? Tire size?

So...it looks to me that the big advantage is the mounts. Are the shocks an springs one unit?

Brian,
go to Pirate4x4 and do a search..you will found out all you ever wanted to know (and more) about coilovers.

Basically, they consist of a coilover shock and usually two springs (sometimes one spring) usually, it seems like people with coilovers like to run one soft spring and one HD spring in their setup...
Generally, a good coilover shock will be at least $250ish and up, springs are usually 40-50 each, then there is misc. hardware, etc...It gets expensive fast, obviously.

Brian,

I did a bit of research into coilovers for my D90 a few years ago. Basically what I found was that:

1. Coilovers will be really expensive. Expect to pay about $700 per corner for the good stuff like the 2.5 series Fox racing coilovers.

2. Expect to pay more money because you'll have to get decent amount of custom fabrication done. You'll NEED custom front upper and lower shock mounts You'll also need to significantly beef up the rear lower shock mounts since they're not designed to handle the entire weight of the truck. You may need custom upper rear shock mounts as well, depending on what you're running right now.

3. Expect to pay even more money because you probably won't get the rig dialed in right the first time. The additional money will be in the form of a second set of coilover springs and maybe re-valving your shocks.

If you do it right, and get everything dialed in right, you'll have a rig that kicks *ss on the trail, semi-tolerable road manners, but nearly infinite adjsutablility with regards to lift, etc.

IMHO, that's a big chunk of change to lay down for a rig unless it's a dedicated trail rig that you're going to use to hit the gonzo trails...

If you're going to the Colorado get together this weekend, I can bring some of the research and info that I've collected on it.

Nathan,

I wish I was going to be able to be there but I will be up north. My truck is up there and I need to do some testing on it to make sure everything is good to go. If it was any other weekend.....and I live like 5min from where you guys are meeting, big bummer.

Maybe we can do another one this summer.

Joseph,

There are two main Land Rover clubs here in Colorado:

Rover Riders
http://www.roverriders.org

Solihull Society
http://www.solihullsociety.org/

There used to be a big difference in the two clubs, SS was primarily a Series and easy trail club, while RR was a "hardcore" wheelin club. In the past year or two the difference has really dwindled (including joint events), so membersip to one is about the same as membership to both...
