I am going to put the factory ladder on the back of my Disco, are self tappers OK? If I should use the rivet nuts that came with the ladder instead of self tappers, why?

I bought an aftermarket ladder and used stainless self tappers. It's still hangin' on...

I used ss self tapper for the top part and ss nut and bolt for the bottom. I am sure that you could use self tapping there but I would think if you use the ladder alot then you will start having problems with it because you can't get them tight enough and/or the hole will start getting elongated.
Just my worthless opinion:-)

MTB,

I thought that if the bottom got loose I could remove the rear door panel and use a different fastener. When I had the rear door panel off I would also modify my spare tire carrier for a larger tire.

I will go with the self tappers

I Am just about to install a ladder, but my friend has a rivnut tool so I might give that a shot. I did find a link on cheap rivnut tools.

If you do end up going with a different fastener it can't be long(if you use a bolt) it will interfere with the latch mechanism Don't ask how I know.:-)
Good Luck

I can't be for sure w/o pulling them, but I think I used 3/4 screws. Fat, stubby and stainless.
