Assuming the Hummer-pack hasn't taken them all....check it outhttp://shop2.outpost.com/product/3577804:

They work well, come with batteries and even have a cute flash-light. Good for spotter/driver comm.

AND FREEEEEEE :-)

We should fell guilty about insulting hummers now. Thanks, I got a set. I had a pair already, but another pair, even if they are cheap ones, is even better! You learned us LR owners like the word free!

Man those are uglyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :-) I'm thinking about getting them, but damn they are ugly, so ugly they aren't worth the $5 s&h charge unless they work really damn well. You sound like you have them Steve so whats the word are they pretty clear??? Do you have any idea if they could be compatible with a Motorola T5420??? I'd think about them if they did all that but otherwise I'll stick to saying DAMN THOSE THINGS ARE UGLY!!!!!!!!!!

J/K with you Steve, if I didn't already have a nice set these would be on the way but as it is... ok I'll save you from hearing it again :-)

Seriously, thanks Steve I'm sure quite a few cheap bastards will finally be able to communicate on the trail now.

Geez guys....what's so difficult about the concept of FREE? It frankly blows me away that these things are available for break-even on cost & rebate. Pay $25, get a $25 rebate.

Carter...these things look exactly like every other FRS radio I've seen lately. So here's my performance rundown:

They're plasticky, wimpy and sorta look like the real thing.....JUST LIKE THE HUMMER H2!!!!!!

Seriously...they're basically what you expect:light, plasticky and obviously not the costly stuff....but it works perfectly!!! The thing sends out a signal with the same power as the costly ones. The sound is perfectly clear and solid. You have 14 channels and even an auto-scan feature. The flashlight is actually cute too: very bright LED projects well.

For me this is perfect...I get lots of newbies showing up to our offroad events and they have no radio's to speak of.....now I've got 6 cheapies to throw at 'em: perfect!!!! They're great for kids and even cute gifts...think about it. I'm gonna stock up...btw, they allow upto 3 sets per customer...I'll doing a six-pack for free!

I was just messing with you Steve and I am thinking about getting a set (they just make my motorolas look like little hope diamonds :-)) to expand my system on those rare occasions I fish in a group larger than 2. Not to get anal but they don't all send out the same signal with the same power, I have used cheapos before and my current motorlas work easily twice the distance of my old no names. Done any kind of a range test to make sure they will reach out past the driveway (not being facetious, I seriously want to know)??? I will be using them for fishing so they will likely be further apart than in most wheeling situations. I hope they work with the ones I already have, I imagine they will though because the motorolas have 14 channels plus 38 'sub frequency' (or something) settings on each channel... so I should be able to dial something up :-)

Seriously not slamming your find, I have already told 2 of my friends around here to pick a set up. I just already have some and use mine a little harder than your average wheeler is going to (blazing my own trails while fishing and whatnot, you understand :-)) so I have room to be a little bit more picky. Plus I am really freaking strapped right now so just ignore me :-) :-)

Hey Carter,

I know your just teasing. Pretty good self-slamming on the H2 on my part...I'm sure that made ya chuckle a bit? :-)

The range test proved excellent...no problems. An RF meter's needle was displaced the same amount as my Motorola FRS radio moved it...so I'm led to believe power output is the same. The flashlight is cute too. Ya just can't go wrong. Check it out:

I bought mine at the store, given that I purchased three I spent $81.19 out the door. Now I'm gonna have to sink another .37 in postage, and let's figure .15 in envelope...so I'm into this thing for $81.71. The rebate is all of $75.

So while it would seem that I'm "out" $6.71...I'd urge you to consider that the IRS doesn't know I got the rebate of $75 AND I have a receipt showing that I paid $81.19. Being that I'm taxed at about 32%....that means I'll write it off with my company (work) and send the gov't $25.98 less as result of lowering my taxable income having taken this as a deduction.

So I end up with 6 FRS disposable radio's AND PROFIT about $19.27 :-) :-) :-) :-)

Course...if ya figure the gas consumption getting there....I almost break-even :-(

But seriously...this will be great. I'm going to have my whole family get them so I end up with about 20 of these things. When I have club events and people show up w/o radio's (despite club requirements to have them)...I can throw them a radio.

Also...I've got lots of kids, these make great little gifts which save the money you'd spend otherwise. Stocking stuffers, perks for employees, gift to gardeners, trail markers on the trail, and depending on if they sink or float: they could be either sinkers or bobbers for your fishing! Great explosive action when used as targets for shooting and relatively effective as paper-weights.

Oh shoot...now everybody knows I'm psychologically afflicted with some disorder. D'OH!!!!!

Trail markers, LOL...

Ok, I've got a set on order then. These two will be lucky if they get used 3 times a year but when they do if I can't hear my buddy upstream I'm coming after you for that $5 shipping and handling :-) :-)

Hey Carter...

Somebody on another list brought up a good point: what if the rebate company is a bunch of bs and this turns out to be one of those bogus things? I'm kinda figuring that Fry's would stand behind what they advertise...so I'm definitely keeping the packaging until I get the check from the rebate place....

just a thought...

I'm not really worried about it, I have done a whole bunch of these manufacturer's rebate things and haven't gotten screwed yet. It usually takes forever to get the check but it has always come, sort of like tax return day on a much smaller scale -its your money but it's still unexpected and cool :-)

Carter,

I plugged my headset into the adapter plug on the thing...this is great: now I can yell at them AND use hand gestures while spotting!

Btw...Fry's also had another "free deal"...it's another FRS radio that you pay $10 for and get a $10 rebate. It's only one radio though and the limit I believe is just one.

Sorry to harp on it....I'm just blown away that these things are free.

Word has it the inventory of the internet ordering warehouse is gone, empty, depleted...history!

What's left is only the inventory at individual stores...otherwise the deal's over & gone.

Gotta strike while the iron's hot. I told this forum only as soon as I heard. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for other stuff.

Alex....please use military terms....you bought 'em for "shits & giggles"

Several people have them already....everyone is very pleased with the product..works well, even comes with its own batteries!!!

It's like there's a party on this FRS deal and everyone's invited! :-)

I took my cousin and went back to the store and collectively picked up another 6 (3 each).

News: having checked them out...we found one bad unit in the batch. So make that several FRS radio's and one paper-weight. It could also prove worthy for target practice?

LOL, too bad i bought a set a while ago and everyone i know has one, too :-)
I wouldn't pass Fry's offer, despite my general dislike for them.

Need to say - CB's sound quality and squelch options beat the shit out of FRS handhelds. It only becomes apparent when you switch back from FRS to CB. No magic there, speakers are bigger on CB.

Great point Peter!

I've alomst demanded that everyone in the offroad club have a CB....but we continue to get newbies without them. But FRS's are all over the place.

By having a bunch of radio's on hand, I can at least throw a unit at these people so I don't have to walk all the way down to their window to tell them how to put their transfer cases in 4-low. And if it's not 4-low...it's some other stupid problem that's holding up the line!

F'in newbies!! :-)

c'mon Steve, everyone's a newbie at least once in his/her life!

watch out for someone who always comes unprepared, that's far worse than newbies.

You mean like people who show up with their sidebars/sidesteps still attached?

Or the kid who got stuck, we threw him a tow strap...and he proceeded to attach the strap to the fake plastic hood handles?

Did you guys know that the H1 can self-destruct it's half-shafts? oh yeah! The disc brake is not out by the wheel...it's inside next to the transfer case. If a tire gets in the air and the H1 loses forward momentum...most newbies will just gas it harder. When they realize they aren't going to go forward they usually will slam on the brake to prevent themselves from sliding backwards. Well...the tire in the air is spinning super-fast and then the brake grabs it: all the weight of the tire, wheel, half-shaft, etc will tend to either snap the half-shaft OR tear apart the A-arm!!

Let me guess...you want proof?:

Steve,
"What's left is only the inventory at individual stores...otherwise the deal's over & gone. " The rebate is good until the end of the year though. So if they come back in stock, or if you find them some place else, you can still use it.

Thanks SD,

I never bought them over the web, but my store has hundreds of them left! I've got my fill though...but I'm sure years down the line I'll have wished I got more.

tow strap to the hood handles? wow... that's crafty.

what you're saying about the H1 is a known issue with all inboard brakes. and not only off-road.

Just for the record...a buddy of mine who is really big on VHF communication tells me these freebies are pretty much junk. He says it's not doing FRS justice to push these things.

All I can tell ya is they seem to work pretty well, make great kids gifts, are better then nothing (which lots of newbies show up to events with) and....the price was right!
