Check engine light been on for a week, had the code checked, p0130 A bank upstream O2 sensor. Do I need to change more than this one? Never done the job. Where is it located? Easy Access? Which side is the A bank? Thanks.

You can change them one at a time, and we would do that here on a 50k mile truck. However, the service life of these sensors is about 100k miles. If you are at that point you might as well save yourself a continuing service hassle and change all 4.

The sensors are screwed into the catalytic converter and are reached from under the car.

That's a good theory but here in Canada, each sensor is $330 a piece (then tack on $100/hr labor per sensor) so doing all 4 at once whether you need to or not, does not look all that economical...unless you source the sensors out yourself and do the installs yourself. That's a pretty steep cost to take at one time. By the time you're done, that's an almost $2000 job...and that's just for O2 sensors!

LOL...nope. That's $330 CDN but I bought mine (2 sensors) from buyoxygensensors.com instead for $100/ea USD which after conversion, duty, taxes and shipping was still cheaper than ONE sensor through the dealership!

$330 CDN is only about 50 bucks. He's getting a hell of a deal on those sensors.

I'm replacing the two on my LWB RR next week. I got them from oxygensensors.com.

They have two styles, one is plug-n-play for about 90 bucks (that's $5500CDN), or one that you have to solder your old connector onto for about 50 bucks (that's like I think around $4579 CDN).

I'll be doing some soldering so save a peso or two.

I didn't know Disco's had 4 o2 sensors??? Where are the other two?

Ha Ha Michael

It is not that bad, our dollar is not that bad, I think it rising!!!

Alan is right about the local dealers, they are rather expensive and we do not have too much to choose from up in Alberta. You can try Napa or whatever and they just tell you to go to the dealer.

Alan

I hope you sourced them out yourself. I did when I needed them because I was not going to pony up that cash for something so minor.
I know this is a little on the side, but I heard that there was a wrecking company that has parts in Edmonton that has specialty parts. I think it was Blackgold or something like that. Would you know?

Does it really take an hour but I guess when you have to sip coffee it can get tricky.

LOL...good one Michael. Sometimes it does feel like that but I've noticed that some things are much cheaper to buy from the US (ie. O2 sensors) and other things is much more expensive (ie. cargo mats) so you really have to do your research. In some cases, it's even cheaper to buy from a UK parts dealer.

Chris

yup, I sourced them out myself and I have my own shop manual so I knew where all the sensors were located and how to replace them. Some things I wasn't sure about but nothing a search through the archives here didn't solve. When the dealership quoted me $330 I thought they were talking all four but the Service Manager said "nope, that's for one" so I said no thanks. I ended up buying my sensors from oxygensensors.com. I shopped around here in the city but no one could beat the prices from there. I don't know about Blackgold but I know a fellow who restores Series Landies as well as runs a parts business for Land Rovers and he has shipments of LR parts come in every month from the UK but when I asked about his prices, he wasn't much better than the dealership. I think his price for O2 sensors was about $20 cheaper than the dealerships. If you want parts for Series trucks, then yes, he's very reasonable but for newer generation LRs, no, he's no cheaper than dealers. There's a few guys here that deal with military stuff and every once in a while you can find LRs in their yards but it's only useful if you have a Defender. Not a lot of Discos in Edmonton and most of the ones you see are on lease plans with owners that would never dream of taking their trucks off-road. I'm not sure what it's like in Calgary but I know there's a lot more Discos there. I found it useful to talk to some of the independant Jag shops as some of them do work on LRs too and can get parts, just a matter of getting them to do the work is the problem.

As far as the dealership is concerned, it takes an hour per sensor to replace and my shop manual quotes labor time of an hour too I think. Some sensors are easy to get at but others are not. It's just a matter of patience.

Funny, funny, funny I guess it will never end

Alan
I was once told what the ratio was for leased and owned. I think it was 4 out of five were leased but this was a few years ago so I am not to sure. I was good friends with the Sales manager her in Calgary but he left a few years to go to MB.

Yea it's a very high proportion of lease to own folks around here. And it's sad to say but a lot of them aren't the friendliest of folks. I was floored one day when two different fellows waved to me as they drove by but that was it. Every other LR owner has been rather "snooty". It was a bit of an eye opener one day when I was asking the Service Mgr about some mods I wanted to do and he said that I was the second guy they've ever had who's come in wanting to modify their Disco so that's a good sign of how many of these things are kept beyond their warranty/lease periods.

Garrett - better watch out, the CDN dollar is climbing. Perrish the thought the day that international currency is measured against the Canadian "loonie". :-)

Thanks for the info. I haven't bought one yet, what with mother's day and all. Course the light went back out today. For that many loonies, I might wait til it comes back on.

Just keep your eye on fuel consumption. A bad O2 sensor can make your truck run too lean or too rich which can screw up fuel consumption...not that it could get a whole lot worse on a LR.

I was told there is a "special tool" for getting to the O2 sensors. Is this true or can you just get your arm up there with an open-ended socket wrench (for example) and get them out?
