Anyone know the size and tread count of the tie rods ends that fit a 97 disco?

Don't forget left and right-hand thread.

Taps will cost about $50 for the pair.

Nobody else uses one that fits exactly, either the thread or taper is wrong.

Ford jam nuts work.

Paul,

What are the part numbers you posted for? Ford jam nut? or is it some Land Rover part? I have looked for taps and I have not found a left hand one yet, do you know any one that has them?

Ronald, I have two sets, but that's because they were sold in pairs (each tap). I went to my local machine shop and had them order them for me. Cost was a little over $100 for the two sets. I think the RH units were $25 for the two peices, and the LH units were over $70 for the two, because it's a very unusual thread pitch, plus it's LH vs RH.

I just need to make some jam nuts. I have been all over the place and cannot find the right size. Even the two machine shops here in my town did not have the right size. If I haveto buy the taps i might make some HD tie rods and drag links and just but right hand threads in both ends. I have done this on Toyotas and its works out OK. You just have to pop the tie rod end to align the tires.

Has anyone put on Chevy Tie rods before?

Watch the taper if you plan on going with anything not LR. The stock taper is 14 degrees. I know Ford is something like 7 degrees.

D.
we buy our taps @ Msc industrial supply
check their web site for the right hand (around $24) the left hand you'll have to call them, not on web site (around $32).
we use 1 1/8 hex stock to make our jam nuts.
those taps require a 5/8" (.625")hole for a good thread . nix the ford nut idea, with big heavy rods use a jamnut that is proportional in size. GM also makes an 11/16-16 nut but it is a lug nut application. i've got tons of jamnuts if you want any.
and something else to consider, we do a lot of steering rods setup with all right hand thread. idea comes from building rock crawlers, if you break an end you just carry one spare that fits all ends.
good luck.

If you want a real HEAVY duty set, I suggest you do away with those cheesy stock LR rod's and end's and switch over to the stock Hummer H2 set up. You can't go wrong with those babies :-)

I think I am going to use Hiem Joints (Johnney Joints) now. It may not be legal, but I don't think I will ever have to worry abot them agin.

heim joints are different than "johney joints" (rubicon express term) and heim joints wear much faster that a stock rod end. not to mention , they rattle when they start to wear.
on dedicated trail truck no worries.
on a daily driver no way!
good luck
