So, I take the truck (99D1 w/60k) in to have the steering box replaced and the rear main seal replaced. I told the svc guy that I seem to be suffering a power loss/bleeding power. If I'm running 75-80 and then slow down to 60ish due to great Atlanta traffic, I more or less need to be going down hill in a hurricane to get back to speed. I think that it's the kick down cable. The truck doesn't want to down shift or doesn't feel the need to. The service guy tells me it could be a valve issue and could need a valve job. Well, I had a valve job at around 48k. I argued a little with him about this. It's not exhibiting the valve job traits like last time. I just think it needs to down shift. Has anyone heard of 2 valve jobs? And that would be 2 within 12k.

Get this, he calls me back to tell me there's nothing wrong with the steering box. Two weeks ago, "it was shot and had to be replaced. It was leaking like crazy!" He called and stated that the tech said there was nothing wrong with it and that it was just dirty from a loose hose fix from a year ago. You'd think they would really check things out. Here's the rub: My rear pinion seal is now mysteriously leaking. It didn't look leaky the other day while I was under the truck. Hmmm...I'm smell a fleecing!!!

I have the service manual. It's really not that easy for me to fix the rear main seal in the parking lot of my apartment complex as pulling the engine is ness. I didn't think that the steering box was leaking or was bad. No "new" liquid. No new liquid from the pinion as well.

Time to change you service centre. If they are disreputable, they fix one problem and tinker around with something else so as to create further work. A valve job at 48K sounds suspicious, let alone another one at 60K.
From what you have said, it's probably the kick down that needs adjusting, this usually only take a couple of minutes.

The truck should have enough power to get from 60 to 75 without shifting down. Maybe your transmission should shift sooner, but it sounds like your motor is weak. Perhaps you should find someone a little sharper to evaluate it and go for a ride.

As to the main seal - we now change them in 4-5 hours without powertrain removal.

As to the steering box - be glad they told you the original diagnosis was wrong. And pinion seals leak all the time.

"As to the main seal - we now change them in 4-5 hours without powertrain removal."

What you are really changing is the "cross seals" not the rear main, and if it is taking 4-5 hours you are slow. :-) Now I will admit most times the cross seals are the major offenders but I have seen a lot where the rear main is also wet so unless you know this is the issue you are best doing it correctly.

I did change service centres. The one closest to my home treats people poorly unless their last name is Trump or Gates. My currrent centre was great until my svc rep moved to parts. The trouble started with the new svc rep. He stated that the techs said I had leaky oil cooler lines. I replaced them myself. Ooops. He told me wrong. It was my steering box. Both are/were dirty. Neither was bad. They are trying to recoup the valve job costs I guess.
