Hey Folks, I've heard varying reports on which grade of oil to use in my truck, so I'll throw out my scenario and hopefully some of the gurus will chime in and bless me with a response... Here's the lowdown: - 94 DI SE7 Automatic - 140K - Getting a valve job, planed head, and a new head gasket as we speak. - Truck was running hot under load last summer (4wheeling on the beach), replaced radiator and water pump but still ran hot under load. ...now the kicker - I just bought a boat/motor/trailer that weighs 4520-lbs and will be towing it to Cape Cod each weekend this summer. That said, what grade/make of oil would you recommend??? TIA, Chuckster

I think Mobil synthetics are the best; 10W 30 or 10W 40. I have 15W 50 Mobil synthetic racing oil in my 96'. This oil is thicker and made for higher temperatures. |

Chuck: I change my oil every 3,000 miles or about every three weeks. I use dino 10-W30 that comes out of a big red five-gallon pail. Buying in bulk helps heal the pain of regular oil changes. If you don't drive as much as I do, go with the synthetic, but if you are going to be changing often, I think the cost can become an issue. Peace, Paul |

I like Castrol Syntec Blend 20/50. Best oil I've ever used, plus changing oil every 3000 miles. |

i run rotella in my scout and it is first rate all the way. there are millions of trucks on the road as testament to it. but always mobile 1 in the disco 5/50 in the winter 15/50 in the summer. the cleaning ability alone is justifacation for the added cost...these are really dirty motors....also I go 5k between changes all the time at least with the mobile 1. |

Thanks Guys... I was leaning towards the Mobil or the Rotella myself, just wanted to hear it from someone else I guess. 10/30 or 10/40 just seems too thin for me, I'd like to do everything possible to keep this pig cool... Thanks for the input! Chuckster |

Chuckster, My memeory tells me that thinner oil cools an engine better. Plus the advantage of less HP loss due to higher viscousity. Don't really know though, it just seems that a lighter weight oil would pump faster/easier and have a better thermal characteristic than heavier oil. |

I have been running Valvoline 10/w30 in my 97 disco since 70,000 miles. I now have 120,000 and have never done anything to the motor, not even the valves. I don't think the brands of oil really make a difference. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are good oils and I have seen them takes trucks over 200,000, but really I think the secret is changing the oil regurlary and driving habits. |

Thom, what a coincidence - I run Rotella 15W40 dino in my jeeps, and Castrol or Mobil 5W50 synthetic in the rovers. D.C., if you thing all oils are the same, check this. For the same nominal viscosity rating, there may be 46% difference in viscosity index, and pour temperature can vary from -10C to -49C. peter |

Synthetic oils are the best. They never break down, they just get dirty. Change your filter every 2k and top off the resevoir. I like Mobile and Castrol syns the best. |
