What are the symptoms of a water pump about to go? Do they go all at once or gradually? Will there be noise?

My lower hose on my 97 disco ate it a couple of weeks ago and I'm getting some slight overheating since. I'm replacing my viscous fan as there is no difference in how it spins, hot or cold. Just wondering if when my hose went, I somehow damaged the water pump and it's just waiting to get me.

Ear-piercing squeaking and squealing, loss of antifreeze, indication of antifreeze around water pump shaft, and overheating.

If it's the original one, fix it now and save yourself the hassle. Do a search and see my response to replacing one - very easy.

Wait, no difference in the viscous - hot or cold??? Sounds like t-stat, or perhaps some air trapped in the system...

I just replaced the t-stat and flushed the heck out of it last weekend. Could be some air somewhere but coolant level is constant. It also only seems to be a problem on days over about 80 degrees.

Is there a way to burp the system?

When my water pump started to go it was just a leak out of the weep (sp) hole on the side. I'm paranoid about coolant leaks after scooping out discoweb. I'm always checking my truck every other day seems like.

Rod the radiator if you dont want to buy a new one. I bet the truck gets hot with the A/C on only. If you turn off the A/C it cools back down right? Rod and clean the radiator.

It doesn't matter whether the A/C is on or not. If it's above 80 degrees, after about 15 minutes, it will creep up if I'm in stop and go traffic or under about 50 mph. If I put in neutral and rev it up, it will go down, or if I really get on it.

But it can't be good to drive around like that. People think I'm trying to race them, which is funny. My truck won't beat anyone.

Gary:
You have the classic symptoms of a clogged radiator. Either rod, recore, or replace, the misery you will save is your own.

If you kept on driving your truck would eventually overheat no matter what you did. I had the same problem with my 91 RR, had it recored for $350 was the best $350 ever spent on that truck.
