speed sensor...most likely..

quite common..

on the highway, then you seem to lose power and the truck shudders a bit, then about 3 seconds later everything is ok..

Okay here's a little more to ponder.

For the last few weeks I've had an infrequent vibration along with a shudder at take-off and a noticable lack of power at steep inclines, particularly off-road. Tonight on the drive home cruising about 60mph, something wierd happened. I don't know how to explain it properly, but was sort of like a lack of resistance to the drive of the vehicle (revs seemed to increase, but no knock down or gear change), then suddenly it was "fine" again. The vibration is the worst it's been since.

After getting home this evening I've been rolling around under the bloody thing and this is what I've found.

With rear wheels on the ground, grabbing the road wheel with both hands and rocking it, there seems to be a knocking (could be suspention?) both sides the same. With rear end on jack stands and same test no knock. Rolling both wheels while on stands, slight gear noise but nothing major. U-joint are okay and greased regularly, road wheels are tight.

I'm going back out to see what else I can find. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

i dont think your suspension would have anything to do with it, suspension problems usually are related to steering issues or vibrations/ wobbling at certain speeds, and is almost always repeatable.

Your lack of power and shuddering you described in your first post sounds to me like a speed sensor issue.

If you revs went up while still in gear that is bothersome, and sounds like you may have some sort of transmission issue. can you repeat it, or is it totally random? What mods have you made to the truck?

The issue with the revs is the first time. The shudder happens pretty frequently, especially if a little more power than usual is required, ie hill start, on level ground it's 50-50 to whether or not it shudders.

Also, it all seems to be coming from the rear end, the shudder is felt through the lower back of the seat, definately not coming through the steering whell.

ya, that sounds like it.. Mine did that on the highway going up hills, or on long multi hour drives.. seemed to relate to how hot the transmission was.. I never dealt with mine, cause it went away when I moved to Colorado all on its own, but when it was happening , everyone overwhelmingly aggreed it was speed sensor including the dealer..

so for what its worth.. thats my suggestion

My latest find has put a whole new spin on the problem.

It appears that the transfer box mounting has come lose! The mounting pads(?-rubber disc sandwiched between two metal discs with threaded ends) have seperated causing the box to shift. This, in turn, has caused the rear prop shaft to extend itself to accomadate the new box position.

That's probably where the vibrations and shudder are coming from, as far as the issue on the way home this evening I'll have to try a new speed sensor.

So any tips on how I'm going to replace these rubber mounting pads and realign the transfer box? Also, is this the kind of item the local dealer will keep in stock, as this is my daily driver and I would rather run out and get the parts in the AM and get it sorted if possible.

I don't think you'll have any problem aligning it. A big pry bar? The mounts shouldn't be difficult to find.
