I am needing to replace a front brake rotor on my 96 Discovery. I was calling around to find the best deal on brake rotors. Does anybody have experience or opinions about various suppliers/sellers of rotors.

$98 - Land Rover Dealership
$70 - NAPA
$45 - AutoZone

I am lead to go with the AutoZone product since it is half the price, but will I regret it? I don't know who the manufacturer of the rotor is. I thought their was a tech page for replacing rotors, but I can't find it anymore. Thanks for the help!

I am very happy with DBA rotors, I had front drivers side bad but I decided to make it simple and do all the breaks at once.. Will you regret it I guess it depends on a lot of factors, weight, how you break, but with the weight of the Disco I prefer safe side.

I second (Landrovertom)... xks.com has the best prices and fast shipping.. Bought brakes/rotors/bearings and cv juice. Also had oil filters on sale.

I got my front rotors from O'Riley, about the same price as AutoZone and probably the same quaility. I have not had any problems with them, nor have I notice any problematic wear or noise. Try them if they don't work for you, you've only lost $40 bucks.

When you replace the rotors, do you need to replace the pads also? Is it possible just to pull the entire calipher off and pull the rotor for replacement? And (I could look this part up in the book I guess), but do you need to bleed the system after?

If you are going to pull the rotor, popping in new pads just makes sense. :-)

I've read pads and rotors both need some sort of "setting" time(pads usually 500 miles of light braking, not sure about rotors) to prepare their respective new surfaces. If you still have life in your old pads, use them to set your new rotors and vice versa. Ive notice a difference from when I've done brakes and rotos on both of my trucks. On the Disco, I replaced both at the same time. They squealed like an MF and were hard for about 1000 miles then they were fine. Same brakes and rotors done on the D90(only difference being vented front rotors as opposed to the Disco's solid rotors), I used the old pads for 500 or so miles on the new rotors then replaceed them with the new pads. They never squealed and braking was nice and grippy.

If your brake pads are still good there is no need to replace them, unless your old rotor was already damaged and had caused some damage on your old pads. When you take the caliper apart take a look at your current pads if they are still good meaning no deep groves and have plenty of material left for stopping power don't change them. You will need to bleed the brakes a bit and push your pistons back a bit, the new rotors are thicker than your old one so you need to push the brake pads back a bit so they will fit. It will be a good idea to have a brand new pair at hand before you start the job, you never know if you might need them or not.

Some interesting info on what it costs to replace brake pads for those who live in Raleigh/Cary North Carolina.

My 99 Disco 14 days old now needed rear brake pads. Couldn't wait till the previous owner sent me the handle to the bottle jack otherwise I would have replaced the brake pads myself. Nonetheless I did find some interesting info from the stores in Cary,NC to replace brake pads. Below are the quotes:

1. Carolina Domestic & Imports - $366 (OEM parts + plus turning rotors + labor)
2. NAPA - $289 ( Raybestos pads + labor)
3. AdvanceAutoParts - doesn't carry the pads
4. NTB - $136 ( Raybestos pads + labor + 12 month/12k mi warranty )

Interesting huh!! Got them replaced at NTB!!

you can change the pads in a D1 in well under a hour all four corners.

no need to bleed or remove calipers.

rotors are only needed when the current ones are damaged,warped or worn thin. just dont let them go metal to metal and they will last a good long time.

you should always put new pads on new rotors always always always!

Thom's advice is best,IMHO. Very concisely put too, Thom.

Whenever you place a parts order order a set of brake retainer pins and springs too. You'll never be wanting for them then...
