What is everyone's thoughts on this? Does treating your truck well equal more in repair bills? Do you put the hammer down every time you accelerate or do you gently speed up? Do you slow down for bumps or speed up? Is your truck driven hard and put up wet? I've heard the argument that treating your LR nicely will cause it to break down more often. I don't lean in any one direction. Just looking for a discussion on this one.
Thanks

I've rolled mine off-road... It seems to like it, and I know I sure as hell do.

I really no longer see a need to speed excesivly. And by excessively I mean 15+ over the speed limit. You will get to where you going and by driving faster endanger yourself and others. I am 18 so I am supposed to drive fast, but I see no need to at all.

Just my 2cents

Sounds like we should open an X file on Bill.

The wear induced is exactly what you imagine it might be. Usually nothing is a problem unless you BREAK something, like a driveshaft or something. I concern myself more with not causing clunks and such while accelerating/shifting, etc. Hitting the gas, as long as you hit it steadily, just cleans the motor out. They are long life (low compression) engines, so they don't even run very hard at full throttle. Just try to be nice to the rest of the driveline when you do it.

I saw always be nice to your car, if nice means taking it off road and using it for it's intent than thats great! if nice to you means driving it around town from shopping mall to shopping mall that's great also, your car will break down no matter what, expect it, live with it and learn how to fix it!!!!!

As for off-roading or mall-crawling, it doesn't matter. Is it better to give it hell going anywhere or to take it easy? Would this constitute ragging it out? Now, I'm not talking about being Granny or anything but just driving hard in any situation. I keep hearing (from LR reps and others) that these trucks do not like being babied by any means and that they should be driven hard because they like it. It's good for the engine. It's good for the suspension. It's good for everything. You'd think that it would be the opposite. Treat it good and it will treat you back.

So driving the hell out of it as a daily driver won't lead to future problems other than normal? I never thought it would be better to drive it hard, but i'm 18 so it won't be hard.

Well if I were a mechanic or an evil land rover representative, I'd tell you to rag your car, so that when it breaks, I can fix it for a couple meeellion dollars.

:-) Just thought I'd throw that in, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks. I usually take it really easy with my Disco, and I've had heaps of problems, but I think it's coincidence with mileage.

I'm contious about my rig, but I don't pamper it. I don't accelerate hard from a standing start, but will ease into it. Off-road, I try to take an easy approach first. If that doesn't work, I'll progressively get more aggressive until I either make it, or realize that I'm not going to make it regardless. I say just be respectful to it and use common sense.

I think maintenence is more critical than how hard you drive it though.

I second everything in Greg's post and especially agree with the above statement. Maintenance is the key whether you do it yourself or pay for it. Regardless of how hard you drive on or off road, things are going to wear and will need to be replaced. I do believe that taking a vehicle off road that's designed to be used off road is beneficial, especially when aftermarket modifications are added. Imagine what would happen if you only used half of your arms range of motion, you would eventually lose the range you don't use. I think I'm starting to get off track now, but to answer you original question Jack, I believe that driving it nicely MEANS using it for it's intended purpose, which for a Land Rover is off road. Never putting it into low range and never stretching its suspension components is not being nice; it's damn abuse in my opinion.
