does anyone who has a gallery on here have a side on pic of their rover with 235/85 r16's on it? just want to get an idea of the height....

Robert - are you running those 235/85/16s on your D1? If so, did you have to do any trimming or do you have a lift on it?

You can see a couple of close up's in my gallery of the Goodyear MTR 235/85/16's on my 97 D1. I did have to trim the back quarter panel edges about an inch to accomodate this size tire.

wow..what a great response. cheers guys.. im trying to convince my self and my missus that we should get these tyres and trim our gaurds...but i dont want to cut my car...

If it makes you feel any better, I just ordered a set of 5 Dunlop Radial Rover R/T's sized 235/85/16 today from Discount Tire for my '97 Discovery SD7.

After running the prices for Tire Rack + shipping charges + local install charges or ordering through the local Discount Tire store the net price came out in favor of Discount Tire by about $50 and I get the benefit that if there are any problems, I just take them back to Discount Tire and not go through any shipping/return hassles.

If you off-road your Disco, I wouldn't be too concerned about trimming a little bit off the fenders on the rear. You are more likely to accidentally scrape/scratch the Disco offroad than really mess it up in a controlled environment where you are cutting/trimming some metal. Nice thing is that you are trimming aluminum and not heavy gauge steel, so the job is a little easier. A Dremel or coping saw will certainly do the trick, but if you have access to an air compressor and a die grinder with a good metal cutting disk it will take almost no time at all.

Alternatively, there is the other trick in the tech section to push out the bottom of the rear fender instead of cutting. But, from my prior experience with rolling and reforming steel fenders to fit oversized tires to O.E.M. bodied race cars I would just trim out the offending fender portions in this case and be done with it.

Alan,

I like them a lot. Not sure if they are really any better than others that are out there though. I have seen a lot that are very comparable. However Rockware is about an hour away so that is good. They mount to the frame with bump stops on the sills. I have jacked the rig from them before and used them quite a bit.

I saw the pics on how to Trim but i'm not finding it very helpful.. (it would help to see before /after pics) I want to put on these size tires whenever I change mine, so I'm very interested on what mods I'm gonna have to do... thanks

I used the fender-relocation trick and have been happy with it. No trimming required. My .02

Forgot to mention I've got OME HD springs.. I don't think the fender-relocation is enough if you're on stock springs.

Todd, I second Tom's post. 96 D1 w/ OME HD springs and 235/85 BFG MTs. I used the fender-relocation trick and have no rubbing at full flex.

I would love to have someone "re-explain" the trimming technique, and/or tell me where to find the "fender relocation" thread. I am scheduled for a 2" OME and 235/85 BFG's. Can my tire shop do the trimming?

cheers guys..just got my 1 3/4 inch lift...gettin my 235/85s this week. i am getting cooper st's. apparantly they are quite a decent tyre for their price. i am goin to go with the fender relocation trick. hopefully my pics may get posted into a gallery soon. then i will go get some decent ones..show you how us aussies do it..haha

Todd,

Performed surgery today on my '97 D1. In summary, I trimmed the rear fenders, removed the front airdam, and trimmed the bumper caps in anticipation of installing the 235/85's on Monday. I've heard and read conflicting reports as to what was "required" by those of us with stock D1's. So, I took most of the advice I'd seen and went to work. Worst case is that I've trimmed a little too much which leaves room for larger tires next time. :-) I don't think I had to trim the bumper caps, but I wanted a better approach angle anyway (plus my bumper plastic is so faded on my '97 as it's never been garage kept) that I didn't give it a second thought to cut it off. Anyway, here goes some pics and remember it's probably the extreme of what has to be done...

Marked the rear panel for trimming. Marked a point 1.5" back across the bottom most part of the fender. Marked another point on the inside fender lip edge that corresponds where the body "crease line" exists just above the lower fender moulding. Marked another point on the outside edge of the inside fender lip that corresponds with the bottom of the lower fender moulding. Placed a piece of tape to "connect the dots" and draw a straight line.

Note: The above probably doesn't make sense without pictures. Tried posting pics here, but they are too high resolution and my ClubPhoto account is acting up again. I can either send to someone who can post here or send to your email.

now that you mention faded bumper and stuff... here's a little tip I learned from my local car detailer, the guy restained my faded bumpers and side mouldings with liquid shoe polish... cheap as hell, looks good and I do it ever so often when I wax her or something. Just buy the kind that have the little felt tip or sponge tip type thing and youre set...

Hi All,

I'm also looking at getting tires for my '99 DiscoI. I was hoping if someone could point me out to tires other than the 235/85/16R or S. I'd like to install some tough looking off-road tires on my disco something like they put on the Jeep Wrangler's. But at the sametime not really sacrificing too much on normal highway driving as I've not yet started off-roading. I mostly drive around 60mi to work and back 5 days a week.
Problem being I really don't know if I could use the stock rims to put on some fancy looking tires.

Any suggestions on some nice looking wide radials?

Praveen,

If by "tough looking off-road tires", you mean mud terrain type, then there is no such thing as that and not "sacrifice too much on normal highway driving". In your situation, you're probably better off going to AT type tires or stick with your current ones until you start off-roading a bit and know what you need and don't need. The stock tires (and good driving technique) are more than sufficient for most light off-roading situations.

As for your stock rims, they should be 16" rims on your D1 so you have a fair amount to choose from for tires.

Another thing to think about, if you do that much highway driving, you're not going to find MT or AT tires with the same speed rating (not that you should be driving your Disco at those speeds) as you would on road-biased tires. Higher speed rating generally means better handling.

BTW, I run BFG ATs on my truck. I was running the stock Michelin XPC's before they wore out and switched to the BFG's and found it to be a better all around tire for everything I do and the climate I live in.

Just some things to think about.

I think I'll stick with the Dunlop P235/70R-16 104S AT.

Yea, that picture you're talking about is me. There was a lot cooler stuff with streams and things laterwards, but no one wanted to get out of the truck in the middle of a stream to take pictures, so no pics. :-) That same trip, it started to rain pretty heavily so it got pretty muddy. I was still running the Michelin XPCs at this time and they were worn out but I didn't have any problems. Got a little slippery when it started raining but just made it more fun.

I think you'll be happy with the ATs. If you want to eventually go to MT tires, then I'd suggest buying a second set of steel rims for those.

Have fun with your truck...better get back to putting my skid plate on.
