OK, maybe I’m the worst mechanic...that something that I will not argue, but I followed the instructions on the TECH section of this site titled “Fixing non functional rear windows by Don Herrero” and was able to successfully repair the rear windows malfunction, the problem was that after the job was done the CAR DID NOT START, it was towed ($ 98) to the Newport Beach Land Rover dealer and the alarm system was replaced ($ 498), I still do not know what went wrong.

Peter, how about this-

whatever you did there, jammed the window motor or door lock actuator. If you tried to open/close the window or door locks, the fuse (or two) blew in the panel under the dash. Two of these fuses power the alarm unit (a.k.a. spider?), and if any of them is blown, it will not let the Disco start.

I'd say your engine was turning over but not starting - was it how it was?

If only the fuse was blown, why did the dealer have to replace the alarm system?

You sure you didn't have the same problem I had getting the connector off the board and yank the crap out of it? Short the board out on metal or something?

I did that fix, had one of my nimble fingered Laotian ladies at work do the soldering for me so "solderblobjohnny" didn't bridge 10 traces together, and it works fine.

Roland,

my disco would not start unless the battery was dis- and re-connected. The dealer (Pioneer Centres in San Diego, CA) charged me $311 for four days' worth of troubleshooting effort. The diagnosis was - I needed a new ECU.

Guess what... I tracked down the wiring from the alarm unit, and found two blown fuses. Would've found them right away, if I didn't think the dealer's guys had it done. All works now...

And no, the dealer did not refund me $311, neither acknowledged receiving my letter. I was out of steam to push the issue - but I don't trust ANY of the guys there.

Peter,
I would never go to the dealer. The only place I take my vehicle is The Rover Group right off of mir mar and carol rd in San Diego.

Hi Peter,
It's hard to find the right mechanic that understands LR's, that you can trust and doesn't rip you off. My experience with dealers (once) is that when you take in your vehicle more often than not, the apprentice gets to work on it, which helps explain why you have to return the vehicle a number of times to get the same problem sorted, which aggreviates and angers the owner. Because of the large overheads that dealers have, coupled with the fact that they usually get screwed on price when selling the vehicle it's not surprising that they need to generate revenue any way they can.

I'm surprised you were out of steam to push the issue.
Roland.
(your old sparing partner)

Hi Peter
If nothing else I would demand the return of the old ECU.
You could then put it on e-bay and claw back some of your misery.
You have proved there is nothing wrong with it!
Here in the UK they have to keep all changed parts and offer them to you if you so desire, makes them think twice about screwing people.
If you had problems why did you not ask for help here? most guys here are more than happy to help.
Anyway its done now,
Best of luck
Pete S

Here's where, once again, I stick up for pioneer centres. Deal with Sean Puno and you will be happy. If Andy from OZ is the one doing the work you will be happy. They give me lots of free time and advice and always point out the cheapest route or anything that I can do myself. There are three of us at my office who take our discos to Pioneer and none of us purchased them there. I'm not saying you can't have a bad experience, but we have all had a really good one.

just my $0.02

In fact, one time I bought both those guys porterhouse steaks because they had done so much stuff for free and I had to repay them some how.
