I have an 01 Disco II with a light use 36K on it.
I heard a very occasional knocking on cold start for the last year. I brought it in for service a couple of times. The dealer told me the noise was normal and that it was from the lifters. I know what lifter and valve train noise sounds like, this was a rod knock. This time they finally heard it and are replacing the engine with a “new” engine. They tell me the short block is rebuilt and the top is new.
Has any one else had this done?
Does any one have any advise?
Should I push for a free extended warranty?

Please share your experiences with engine R&R and your dealer.

I don't know what sort of warranty extentions you get in the USA, but a rebuild should come with a warranty anyway. They're not charging you for this are they?

No they are not. I did have to push the issue a little to get them to acknowledge the problem.

file a discrete mark on your "old" engine and snap a pic so that you can verify that a new one was really dropped in there after the work is done...

How about a discrete gouge on the oil pan? I told my wife when we bottomed out on the rocks it was a good thing.

Now Jim...are you sure the knock is a rod and not that gouge in the oil pan meeting the crank ??? Lord knows I've stuffed a pan or two bad enough to have those to make an uneasy aquiantence. Also the fix seems a little ass backwards....if it is truly a rod/bearing/crank related knock...wouldn't it make sense to give you a new short block (bottom end)and actually just rebolt the top end back on ? At a minimum, follow Blue's advice, mark the stuff (all the stuff) to see what comes and goes in the land of ???

The oil pan has a very, very small scratch. At first I thought the noise was a lifter draining and then needing to be refilled with oil. The bad part was if the truck sat overnight and I took off as soon as I started the engine the knock would be very loud. To me that meant that it was not something in the valve train but a bad bearing that needed good oil pressure to stop knocking. It was not my Idea for a new engine. I am a little uncomfortable with the idea that is why I started this post.

First off, if this is a rover dealer and it is factory warranty you will (should) be getting a new short block and have your old heads put back on (I am sure you are just confused with top and bottom ends). Rover does not have reman blocks. On your repair order they usually list parts, you should see something like LBB111XXX (last three depend on your truck) which is a new short block.

I would not worry at all. You are getting a NEW engine for free. Be happy, enjoy the 03 loaner for a few days. If you are really paranoid you can write down the old engine number (located right below the head on the block where the head bolts on) and the new one and based on the numbers tell what kind of new block you got.

With a short block your oil pan is reused so that won't work. Personally I would not try to push for an extended warranty, all work at a dealer is 12/12 so even if you were at 49k you would still have a year.

OK I finally have the whole story from the dealer. My service writer told me I was getting an “whole new engine” the he said “refurbished” Then he said "rebuilt short block and new heads” then it was “complete rebuilt engine” So I asked for the service manager. He said I am getting a new short block with a two-year warranty. That makes more sense. I am not worried
