I was in traffic this afternoon and the Tach just stopped working. No sign of life at all while accelerating, stopped, or when starting the 95 Disco with 110k miles. Any thoughts? I am also having a weird whine when the truck is idling in Drive. Feel like its coming form the engine or maybe under the dash/shifter. Truck is driving fine otherwise.

Your alternator is toast, this is a typical failure mode. Replace it before you get nifty lights on your dash that won't go out.

Could that and the whine be related?

One possibility is that the alternator is about gone.

Another possibility, which I just had on my '95 Range Rover(classic LWB), is that the phase tap resistor on the back of the alternator is shot. There should be a white/grey wire on the back of the alt. Unclip this, unbolt the small black terminal, and measure the resistance. Should be something like 820 ohms. If it's open, it's probably gone. I built a "ruggadized" piece with an 820 ohm resistor to get me going again until I find a new piece. The dealer wanted to swap out the alternator for $500-600!! But they can't sell this part separately.

Good luck!

Sounds like my alternator problems...I'd get it checked out pronto.

First the tach went, then the check engine light came on, then the radio quit working, then the A/C, then the speedo, then the engine started to cough and sputter and no matter how much gas you give 'er, she just dies. Get it checked out quick before your battery dies trying to run everything and you are stranded looking for a jumpstart.

I didn't have much of a choice when mine died...I was exactly half way in to a 40 mile offroad trip when it went (yes, I was ignorant of the early warning signs), and I spent the last half of the trip smelling that wonderful aroma of melted plastic and wire as my alternator ate itself, and getting jump started every half hour or so.

Probably the alternator. The same thing has happened to me twice. Tach starts jumping around then quits. Alt. was whining also.

It's the alternator. Bearings have gone bad. Don't drive it. Get the wife's grocery getter and take the alt. to them. If you call ahead you may get it rebuilt while you wait. If you keep driving it will fry the ECU.

I did not drive it this am. Will pull the alternator either today or friday and already have a rebuilder who can do it over the weekend. How hard is the alternator to pull out? I have the Haynes manual. Any advice?

have it checked before you kill your battery, if it is the alt. I had a pretty long trip and my tach died half way there, battery died and I had to get jump started on the way to a mechanic.. sucked.. expensive if you're not close to home too...

Still havnt driven it. I am taking the alternator off tonight as part of my happy hour. Which way do you turn the spanner to release the tensioner? CLockwise as the haynes says? Once the tension is released, i take off the belt then disconnect the wire in the back and the smaller wire, then the two bolts that hold it on. ANything else?

Update..Alternator was toast. It has been rebuilt for less than $100 and will be getting it back tommorrow. By the way, the alternator was a breeze to take out.
