has anyone ever ran only cats and straight pipes on their Disco? Does it sound like a mean v8 or is is obnoxious sounding?

bad ass I heard a 3.9 Disco at Rover Clubhouse in Durham NC he had no cats although he may have been running some type of muffler? it sounded excellent, he said he had to replace the o2 sensors after a while and that the computes had to get used to it but no problems after that got worked out.

Hey Neal, Until today since Uwharrie mine has been running straight out of the Y from the cats. Sounded remarkebly tame, though a bit gruff at idle. But more like a fucking baja truck at any RPM above idle. Nice back-pressure popping between 1st and 2nd though, like a straight race car man...
As of today, I have a Flowmaster 50 series with 2 1/2 inch pipe tucked nice and tight all the way back, no resonator. Sounds throaty yet subtle at idle. At higher RPM, sounds deep throaty but NO-WHERE near obnoxious. I'm truly happy with it.

You'll hear it on Friday Neal.

I just got a Flowmaster 40 with the resonator removed. Sounds a little deeper and the power band is extened slightly. Best $80 I spent yet.

I got bored one day last summer:

1/2 redline - interior...no muffler or resonator

idle - exterior...no muffler or resonator

3/4 redline - exterior...no muffler or resonator

....I wouldn't suggest running it for long periods, it's a good way to burn up a few valves. When you turn the engine off it sucks air back up through the exhaust causing super cooling inside your engine that wouldn't normally happen with a long hot pipe and muffler. I took the mpegs on a warm afternoon and only ran it for a short time.

Your Flowmaster is designed to "reduce the exterior sound levels and interior resonance"...without any kind of muffler that resonance will make your ears ring within the first hour of driving.

YOu shouldn't have problems burning up your valves if you keep a full lenth of pipe on the vehicle. That problem is worst when you run out the headders. But with no Muffler and keeping the Cats you'll have Plenty of heat. If you ditch mufflers and Cats you should still have plenty of hot "pipe" there. But if you watn really free flow yet want to drop the tone down a bit put a Borla XR-1 Racing Muffler on there. TO hear my friends 200 with one go here.
http://www.quattro.ca/media.html
Then click on "sound of I-5 Turbo with mod exh"

Wait, thats not the XR-1 but a normal Borla I think. The XR-1 is a bit louder. Sounds sweet though. my 5ktq has an SR-1. but I dont have a sound clip handy. sorry.
Anyhow, the XR-1 flows the same as a straight pipe but muffles a bit and sounds sweet. ITs about $130 from Summit Racing. ANd its very compact for ground clearance.
