I posted a few days ago that I had a new fuel pump, new plugs and new plug wires, and could not get my rover to start. I had mentioned that I thought it may be the ignition coil. Well, I had my mechanic, who services hummers and rovers, check out my truck and see if he could figure out why it would not start and here's what he said it was:

I needed new spark plugs! It turns out that my new AC-Delco plugs don't always work in rovers, just as some don't always work on japanese cars. I had no idea! Well he replaced the already new AC-Delco plugs with some Champion plugs and said it runs great. I couldn't be happier, saves me the $600 I thought I was going to spend on an ignition coil.

Has anyone else heard of this happening? any plug recommendations?

I call BS! There had to be something else wrong. I commonly use the least expensive plugs I can find (currently Autolite at Wal-Mart) and have never had a problem. Do you have the plugs he took out?

I wonder if a quick call to AC-Delco might not be worth the time, I'm sure thay would be interested.

Peace,
Paul

Paul thanks for replying. My thoughts exactly, I feel like something else has to be wrong. I do have the AC-Delco plugs he took out, what should I look for?

I have noticed that the plugs, which were put on no more than two months ago, were burned which is unusual. What are your thoughts? I'll give AC-Delco a call and see what they have to say. One more thing... the truck takes a few seconds of turning over before it actually starts, after that, the subsequent starts are fine, unless it gets cold. This was happening before I took it in and after. Is this normal or could it be related? Thanks

Late,
Stephen

If your fuel pump was going out it could have cause the plugs to get carbon fouled or burnt, depending how your computer reacted. When my fuel pump was failing on my 95 d1 it would make the fuel system go lean then flood the engine and stall. The plug were shot after a month of use. New fuel pump and NGK-r plugs and it works great, and I get 15mpg with a full size roof rack on with lights! Get the truck and run it, if changing the plugs fixed it, be happy. Check the old plugs buy reading the resistance on them verses there specs.

600 for a coil? Gesh, I spent 80 for an OEM coil.
