97 Disco Running too hot, over-heating. Dealer installed new radiator right before I purchased. Hot! Hot! Hot! Especially when ac is on, and outside temp is high. Any ideas? coolant seems good.. Therm seems to be functioning correctly..

By factory service records, about 65k. I got it at 74k.? Radiator looks funny though, like a bad recon-job.

I don't deal with the dealer much but you might check on what if any warranty may apply on the part.

Check the sensor the connecter may need to be cleaned. If I remember correctly if your facing the motor it is on the right hand side about the front right corner of the intake cover. Clean the connection and see if it helps.

It may at least be a start.

Agreed, dealing with the dealer sometimes stinks! I will try the sensor, but would that just affect the display? The car is actually getting HOT! Draining and cleaning the radiator sound like a good idea? Is it a pain on this vehicle like everything else? (sorry, new LR owner, and a little frustrated by part availability, dealer attitude, goofy tools required, etc...)

Check your thermostat, its a 10 dollar part at an autozone, it wont hurt to check that either.

Yep it will affect the display. I would agree with Jose swap the thermostat. It is cheap and pretty easy to do. It would narrow down the problem. Is the meter in the red?

Yes, It got to the red last week, so I shut off the ac, turned on the heat, and got it back down. Scary though...

Hi,

Did you check your fan, if it was running fast enough ? When engine is stopped did you try to turn it by hand, do you feel it's quite "hard" to turn it ?

Will check the fan. Right now I am having a heck of a time finding a drain-cock on the radiator??? Does one exist or am I supposed to remove a hose?? I hate that if that's the case, I have a dog that would love the taste of that coolant...

If the dealer truly replaced the radiator it is one of two things the waterpump or fan clutch (viscous fan)My bet is the radiator fluid was just flushed.

Not a Disco, but my '92 Roadmaster was overheating till I changed the Fan clutch, then all was well.

If it is the water pump, wouldn't it just stop working all together. Don't know of any that have just slowed down.

Talked to the dealer. The said they took the radiator out and fushed it?? Sounds kinda fishy...The fan seemes to be rotation fine. They obviously would have replaced the coolant in Nov. when they did the work. I ran it last night in my driveway with the ac on for about 1/2 hour, ran normal temp.

Then I drive around, and after about twenty min. it jumped up and almost overheated. (luckily I was at my destination - Matrix movie, over-rated)

I am trying to narrow down my problem, but not much luck. If it were the therm. it would over heat sitting still in my driveway, wouldn't it?

It is your radiator. You have three options:

Replace with a new one.
Rod and clean
Recore

You are only prolonging the inevitable with the bottom two.

Shit! Why would a dealer pull the thing and put it back in last Nov.? I guess I have narrowed it to the radiator itself, and the fans seem to be working correctly, therm seems to be opening at the right temp. I guess it just seems to be in good shape. Fluid doesn't show signs of interior breakdown. I just had a service shop replace two of my oil cooler lines.

What's a resonable price to pay to have a new one installed if I don't have the time?

The cost of the radiator is $500.00 on up. Rod and Clean is about $250.00 on up but will last maybe a year or two if your lucky. Recore is about $400.00.
