A month ago I took the Disco in and had whatever provides grease to the wheel replaced. After that it made a little clunking "feel" occasionally but I could not really pin point when it was doing it. It seemed random. Yesterday I was under the truck and there is just grease all over place on the wheel and joint. It's pretty thick. I sent a picture of it to my mechanic and he says I probably need a "swivel ball rebuild" I have 2 questions. First, Can I do this myself and if so how? Secondly, could the mechanic have caused this? (I do trust these guys but wondering) Any help would be appreciated. |

Yes, you can do it yourself. It isn't hard, just time consuming. I don't think your mechanic could have caused it. Parts will cost no more than $100/side, more if you decide to replace the CV joints. How many miles, etc. Peace, Paul |

Paul, Thank you. It has about 110,000 miles. Should I replace the CV joints? |

Rob, this might give you an idea of what's involved in working on a CV: http://www.yellowdefender.com/how_to_tips/c_v_repair/index.htm The article was written for a D90. Good luck.

I made all the gaskets when I rebuilt mine...just used a sheet of the gasket material, a compass, good scissors, and a hole punch for the studs. I think there is a cross referance in the Tech for the bearings. Most likely yours is leaking from the big seal around the swivel ball. RoverConnection sells the complete seal kit with the grease for $60: http://www.roverconnection.com/Disco%20Parts/swivelseal.htm ...I didn't buy it but that is what I just found while searching google in about 10 seconds. I have several pictures of the teardown process too. If all the bearing are intact and the CV looks to be in good shape (no missing teeth or worn) I wouldn't worry about replacing them. I've driven about 3,000 miles since my rebuild with no leaks or problems. |
