Since I'm definitely leaning towards a disco 1 now that I could just pay cash for (oh man, not having a car payment would be sweet, first time in 8 years) I was just wondering whether or not someone picked up their disco from a dealer. I'm not talking LR certified since I rarely see anything below 99 on LR dealer lots. I'm talking like a 95-97 with anywhere from 80-120K on the clock. Anybody think this is just stupid or an ok idea?

Kevin

I recently purchased a '94 Disco from a small-time private dealer in Long Island, NY that dealt with expensive cars like Mercedes and Rolls. It had around 127,000 miles on it. He just used it to run around in and it spent its whole life running around the island to the Hamptons and back. I got a real good deal on it and the buy went very smooth. All in all, it was a pleasurable experience. I would say look around and if you score a good deal, go for it. I've been lucky so far with the Discovery (knock on wood!).

Best of luck,

I got mine from a dealer who was nice enough, but really dealt in all imports. I drove the car for a couple of days and took it to the local high school auto mechanics dept. They went through it with a fine tooth comb. I found a few things wrong like the back sunroof did not work. I asked to have them fixed or knock some of the price. He called the LR dealer for a price to fix the sunroof and thought he was going to choke.I got $1500 knocked off. Bought it went home closed the sunroof and pulled the hot wire. Hell, I don't ride in the back, what do I care if it works. Just make sure you get someone that knows LR to look at it before you buy. Some discos have never been off the blacktop and some have never seen paved road.

Hi Kevin,
I bought my 91 (3 door) from a mechanic friend of mine with 186,000 miles on it for $9000 Aus (thats was around $4,500 US at the time) and it was driven by a 68 year old surveyor (OK, don't start flaming me about the old lady going to church bit), who had no kids or dog and never once took it off road. The cam was all that needed replacing but what the heck, I put a 4.6L into it anyway, otherwise it's in great condition. Go ahead and buy an oldie, afterall, only a very small percent of people who own a Discovery or any other 4x4 really ever go off road and give it a bashing.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'm more worried about that whole valve job thing but it looks like a 95 and previous doesn't have that problem. Well I'm off to VA for a week of who knows what with the new job. That gives me a week to look at three vehicles which I have lined up. A 95, a 96, and a 97. From 6900 to 8500 respectively.

I bought my 96 from a LR dealer in November '02 w/ 82k miles, great price on it. I checked off everything that was wrong and asked them to fix it pre-sale, they balked on one item (rear resonator - which is getting chopped off anyway) but did everything else. That work amounted to well over $1500. I am very happy with the deal and service in this case.

Just got a 97 Disco from a private owner that had 3. He had used the local LR dealer for anything on it, so they have been very helpful to me(or as helpful as a dealer can be) For what it's worth, I got my 97 with 72k, safari guard, lights, new rubber, and after-market cd for 8300.

Good luck.

well we bought our 97 disco from a dealer. paid $19990 AU$ for it. it does have a few ks on it 175 thou but we had the chance to spend an extra $1100 on a 4 year ALL parts and labour warranty. which is good. The service report from the car yards mechanics rated the car as excellent. They replaced the transfer, altenator bearing, and a few small things so im pretty happy really. it was immaculate all over..no scratches dents etc etc. not a single mark in the car. looked brand new and drove brand new
