I have been on before when I first got my Disco 98 Auto. About some strange noises that ended up being normal "Disco" noises. I noticed the other day every once in a while if I am on the gas and then let off suddenly I hear a noise not that loud just a slight noise almost like same noise I hear when I shift into reverse, only a lot less noticable. Is this a typical Disco trans noise? |

the sound is driveline lash/slop think about the driviline like a wrapped up towel, once its wrapped up tight and all the slop is out it transfers the twist to the other end. twist that other end and it must un twist all the way and retwist in the other direction before it transfers the twist all the way back to the first side. the disco has alot of slop in the drivline so it makes noises as it twists and untwists the drivline. |

Thom, I experience same problem but only when gearbox is hot. Large play and when cold from R to P to D very soft. Can this be some belt tention in gearbox when hot? |

Not if it's the normal slack in the drive train. If you can hook up with another Rover owner in your area to compare that may help to see if it has similar noise. I've had 3 and at one time 2 at once and that helped settle alot of doubts about drivetrain noises. Just think of it as a side effect of owning one of the last pure non automatic 4x4's and it will start to sound cool. |
