I just got done replacing a bad fan clutch and am still getting an occasional squealing noise from the area. Water pump is OK. It seems to be the tensioner pulley because WD 40 quiets it. I ordered this from DAP ($128 !) plus a new serp belt. I thought I had read on this board or in the Tech section that the bearing in this was replaceable, the guy from DAP says no - any input?? |

On a DI the tensioner bearing is one of the most common bearings on earth. 6203-2RSJ or some such. Check the technical section, it takes all of ten minutes to swap the bearing. Be aware that there was a TSB that called for replacing this bearing and the belt to get rid of an annoying idle speed whine. Peace, Paul |

Thanks a lot Paul - Just picked it up at lunch - the counter guy finished the part # as I was saying it - obviously a frequent replacement. How difficult is this to remove?? any special tools?? I'm a 2-3 wrench guy (a la Haynes ) Todd |

ok found this 1999-2000 Land Rover Discovery II Automobiles Recalled Detroit, MI (SafetyAlerts) - The National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) has published the recall of certain 1999-2000 Land Rover Discovery II automobiles because, on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), the loading conditions on the vehicle's left side engine idler pulley can cause the pulley to fracture. Failure of the pulley causes the serpentine belt to be thrown off, resulting in a loss of engine auxiliary functions (power steering, water pump, alternator, air conditioning and ACE). 7,120 vehicles manufactured between May 1998 - April 2000 are affected by this recall. Dealers will install an improved idler pulley. I have found that my pulley has been replaced at 18,000 but it is very noisy is this a sign its about to go! and was this replacement a good one ??? |

Easy job. The snap ring may not have the common holes, rather the ends will taper to the edge of the bearing recess. The bolt that holds it in, is relieved so that it supports the bearing, yet bears none of the load. Pull the bolt, slide the pulley off, clean the gunk out. Pry the retaining ring out (it's been awhile, somebody pipe up!) it will likely require a couple of small screwdrivers and a pair of needle nose vice-grip. Once the retaining ring is out, gently tap the old bearing out, gently tap the new one in, using a socket or similar to exert force ont he outer ring of the bearing (I use a bit of white lube on the ID to help out). Snap the retaining ring in and you're good to go. BTW_there was an earlier TSB for the Series One Discos also. Peace, Paul |
