Hey guys, the trip back to Louisiana w/ the 'orange bitch' was as good as can be expected. But.... on my back drivers side wheel (I was running the alloys on the way home) I kept having to pull over because 3 of the lugs would work their way loose over time, we are talking totally loose, I could turn them w/ my fingers most of the time. I am running the steelies now but does anyone have any ideas on what would cause this?????

Carter, I feel your pain. According to a few people on this site I to have had problems with my nuts. :-)
How tight were your nuts? I bet I could have tightened them good with my 28mm socket and 4 foot lenght of iron pipe.
Didnt you use to have like 3000 posts or something?
Dan

Since this is a funny topic title, I'll go ahead and comment/hi-jack your thread.

My nuts were torqued down to about 200 (rusted) and I retorqued all of these to about 110, and I havnt had that problem ever, with the stock rims.

My question is, you guys ever hear the rattle of the lugnuts while driving. It sounds like most of the lugnuts rattle, like the cover is turning back and forth and it's damn annoying. I thought I read that this would happen if they were too loose, but they are not.

Thanks.

Jared, the solution is to get a roof rack and other noisy items so that you dont hear those noises. That's what I'm going to do.

Carter, 100 ft/lbs? PLEASE! I bet I could put a good 400lbs on your nuts with my four foot pipe. I wonder how much it would take to rip the studs right off?

Since purchasing my 96D1 I have been finding numerous nuts and bolts literally loose/not tight. Everything from valve covers to exhaust manifolds to wipers and others. Anyone else have this problem. Have yet to have the problem with wheel nuts...

hitting yourself in the head w/ that four foot pipe would probablly be more productive :-)

Tom, if I'm still unemployed this weekend I might come down. I'll let you know

The solution to all Rover noises is the R.V.C.

I've had the same problem with my lug nuts. They would loosen within 50 miles. I would tighten them with my hi-lift jack handle over my ratchet and they would still work loose. It only happens on one of my wheels.

I spent two hours this weekend trying to loosen one fricken nut that was over tightened by a local shop. I gave up after bending the stock tire iron.

Brian, I feel your pain. I spent more than two hours. Get a 27 or 28mm socket depending on how messed up your lugs are (use the smallest one that fits over every lug). Get a good 1/2" wrench to fit the socket. I also got a lenght of pipe to get some extra leverage on the wrench (you will need pipe if the jackasses at the tire place got the lugs super tight). The pipe is good to have anyway. You cant use it for the lugs or to sleeve your steering rod or to hit yourself on the head with :-).

Carter, Old Fords used left handed nuts on the left side to prevent lossening. They sure tightened themselves on that side too. There should be no oil or never-sieze on lugs. Studs or nuts wearing out? They tend to tighten on the right side, loosen on the left. Wheel flex on trailers causes loosening, hence the warnings on RV wheelwells about checking lug nuts after the first so many miles. I'd lossen one and check the thread fit. See if it wobbles on the stud. A thread mike would tell you if they're worn. I wouldn't put my life on the blue medium locktite. Safety wire would cure it, but a PIA to change wheels. How often you run those on and off? By hand or with air? How about inspection shops with air guns? Think I'd try new studs and nuts. You could stake them with a punch to keep them from lossening for now 'till you get new ones.
