Well, my heater core finally exploded at the most inconvenient moment this weekend. We were climbing an old mining road in Joshua Tree National Park, leading a group of about 20 Land Rovers. The truck filled with steam and the floor filled with coolant - first the driver and passenger sides then it quickly flowed into the back seat carpets. Major pain in the ass. Of course all the extra clothes were on the floor at the time. Quick fix - one of the group had a pre-made bypass hose - thanks Vince - and we were moving again in about 10 minutes. Question is, do I need to pull out the carpet (and seats) or will it eventually dry out? Any long term damage from coolant spills? The radio crapped out for a while, now it seems OK again, and the central locking didn't respond for a while. I don't plan to replace the core - I've heard it's a major job and I don't remember using it last winter (So.Cal. winter that is :-) ) What's the deal?

Steve:

I would pull up the carpet as much as you can without removing the seats, also try to remove or prop up the padding below, it is like a sponge and will not dry out , when I got my rover the floor boards were all wet and starting to rust. I removed the sill plates, pulled up the carpet as much as I could, stuck some sticks under the carpet to prop it up, then put a fan to it to dry it out. Don't know of any long term damage due to coolant residue, but I just used some kitchen cleaner/409 type stuff and sprayed everything with it and cleaned it much as I could.

I heard the heater core job is a major PITA, I would just leave the bypass hose in, and if you feel really courageous, and have some time then replace the core. There is a winter in So. Cal?

though you dont have the rust issues.
