My 98 disco starts and then shuts off after about 3 seconds (This happened two 3 weeks ago-then was fine- now it did it again yesterday). Last night it did this, and this morning it starts up fine. Both times it has been after I washed it or it rained. Local mechanic wants to charge $500 for a tune up of wires and plugs and a few other minor things. Land Rover wants $700-yeah right. I want to change the wires and plugs myself, but I'm unsure exactly how to do this. Sorry if this has been beat to death, but I found nothing in the archives exactly related.

Also, can the wires and plugs all be changed easily or are they hidden under a bunch of other things?

Dan, the first time I changed the plugs on my 98 disco was the first time I did it on any car. If I can figure it out you can to. Go to the auto parts store and get some plugs and a socket to fit them. As far as wires you can get magnacore or whatever else you like. The only thing I had to move was the air intake to get to a couple of the drivers side plugs. Just do the wires one at a time so you dont get them mixed up. This is really a pretty simple project that a 12 year old girl could probably figure out. The fact that someone would want $700 to do this should be a crime.
Good Luck

Dan, you will also need to set the gap on your spark plug, once you get to the auto store ask them what you need to set the plug gap, they should be more then helpfull. I agree with Daniel, you will just want to do one plug and one wire at a time. Its pretty striaght forward. Good luck.

Dan, you shouldn't have any trouble with the plugs and wires. If you’re concerned get yourself a Hanes repair manual, it should have step-by-step instructions.

Discos are notorious for "wet" start problems. When it doesn't start be careful not to keep cranking it, Discos also flood extremely easy.

I don't know if plugs and wires will solve your starting problem, but it's good to change plugs and wires as a maintenance item anyway.
