As I pulled in the driveway today I noticed steam/smoke coming from the left front wheel-well. As I rolled to a stop I also noticed that the temp gauge was almost pegged. When I got the hood open I noticed the steam was coming out of the right side of the surge tank.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I realize that at the very least that I am looking at replacing said tank. Could it be just a faulty tank, or is this indicative of something very wrong with the engine?

Pouring copious amounts of water on the radiator while the engine was still running did bring the temp down to about 3/4 hot, and the engine wasn't making any typical "overheated" noises.

Any ideas please?

did it rupture at the seam of the tank? i have heard from quite a few people that this is just faulty manufacturing. there is a new tank, white in color, that is the replacement that is supposed to be stronger.

Black and White tanks explode. My 95 white tank went just as you discribed. The dealer said the new beige tanks fixed the issues the older tanks had. Your truck is probably fine, just get a new tank and go with it. If your truck is near 100K you might want to power flush the radiator, the core in there are notorious for clogging. It's an easy fix, I needed a tank in a hurry so I went to the dealer, but you can get it cheaper from vendors like roverconnection, AB, rovers north. Check all the hoses, after my tank went, I had two hoses go, I gave up and replaced them all.

Robbie-

Yeah! It rutured at the seam. At least that is what it looks like until I get it off. (I can wait for the new part, before dissassembly.)

Paul-

Mine was a black tank. No explosion. If the engine got a little hotter though... There would have been more steam preassure and who knows.

Andy-

My truck is a '96 and the tank was black. If your '95 had a white tank, maybe color isn't such a good indicator? It may mean only that LR sourced it's "Genuine" parts from a different OEM.

My truck has almost 150K on it, a flush probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

I didn't check San Jose Land Rover, but Rover Connection was $75 for the part, and British Pacific was $49.00. I even thought about a salvage one but... I know that a new one might be cheaper somewhere, but as I am currently finacially challenged I whent with Brit Pac, as they have always given good service, and they can get it to me the quickest for the lowest price. If I had more time I might have done a bit more shopping. Discount Rovers has always been good to me too.

It's really strange, the top of my 109's radiator is a weak spot too, but it only develops pinhole leaks. Just enough to let the coolant start to bubble.

Guys, thanks for all the input.

Just got the tank this morning. Took about 15 minutes to install. I don't know if this tank qualifies as white or beige. It's kinda in between.

The tank I recieved was non-genuine OEM. I needed to elongate two of the mounting holes to get it to fit. No big deal, but the should have mentioned something when I bought it.

We will now see how long it lasts. I put about 120K on the old one.

The chemistry of the plastic was changed and the usual indicator of the more robust plastic was the new one was made of a "Natural" color plastic, off-white.

It is not uncommon for the holes to need to be elongated, my Genuine OEM (made by a tier one supplier) needed the elongation, but the one I put on a Rangie a few weeks ago, went on without a hitch.

Paul-

Thanks for the info. It gives me just a bit more confidence in it.
