OK, i am sure that someone over several differnt threads may have hit on this from time to time but i have to ask cuz i don't really know. Exactly which sensor does it read? When will it display an error? I have heard of storing of codes what is this? If the digitial gage is working how do you really know? Does it give a blink if the truck is started to let you know it works or does it lay there like my ex? I have one and I have no idea if it works. Thanks for any input. mike w |

Have one what and no idea if it works? OBDI is the first generation of on board diagnostics. It uses the input from the various engine management sensors to control the operation of the engine. When one of these sensosrs detects a condition that is outside the range of which the computer can control, a code is thrown into memory and your check engine light may be illluminated to alert you to the condition. Depending upon the condition that led to the light being lit, the computer may go into a minimal life support mode allowing you to limp home. Other conditions may cause the light to come on and be extinguished if the condition does not persist. In some cases, there may be a two-digit number displayed on the readout to inform you of which sensor is out of range. Be aware though that up until very recently, I had never read a code that proved to be correct. Codes indicating Mass Airflow Sensor failures should be considered suspect unless there is extreme proof it is really the MAF sensor. This is without a doubt the most common error code I encounter and so far, it has never been the MAF sensor. Peace, Paul |

thanks Paul..... i read somewhere that these codes are stored and if this is true is it possible to recall these codes with out an external reader? and is ther a test mode for the actual meter so you can determine if it is actually capable of showing a code, ie lights led light not working etc? mike w |

You will not see any codes displayed unless the check engine light is on. It has been my experience that things get pretty far out of whack before the light comes on and codes thrown. OBDI has a limited capability to display codes without Testbook, Rovacom, or Autologic. I know of no means to test the diagnostic readout box, but have never heard of one failing (very low duty cycle in common usage). Peace, Paul |
