I'm trying to change my front brake pads (D1) for the first time. I don't know when they were last changed, but I've had the truck for 2.5 years now, and they've passed inspection each time. I'm getting the tell-tale noise from the front right so I figured it was time to do them.

Well...I pulled the cotter (sp) pins, but I can't get any of the four "posts" (two per caliper) out to be able to remove the old pads. The caliper, like most of the underside of the truck, has some significant surface corrosion and I'm guessing the posts have become corroded in place. Although I've been working at it with cleaner and small amounts of PBBlaster (careful not to spray or drip into the caliper), as well as some not-too-agressive hammer work, NONE of the pins will even budge. This "20 minute" job has already taken over 4 hours with no sign of progress.

First, could I verify that these four posts come out to the "outside" side of the caliper (ie tword the wheel vs. tword the center of the truck)? That's how they look to go. Next, any ideas on how to drive the little bastards out?

We hoped to use the truck to see family this weekend, and I really didn't expect this to be an issue. As always, thanks in advance!!!

I changed mine just yesterday. Took me 15 min. max. I did not remove the caliper. Remove the cotter pins and the pin that hold the pads in place. Use a C clamp and compress the pads just a bit and pull them out. Using a screw driver compress the pistons of the caliper, two on one side and two on the other side. Slide in the new pads and put it back together. Pump the brakes a few times and your done.

I think I miss read your post a little. The pins come out towards the outside of the truck, or the opposite side where the cotter pins were.

Thanks, D. That was one thing I wanted to verify...I don't want to make maters worse trying to knock them the wrong direction.

I just got back up from messing with them again and I still am not getting any motion on those pins. It's pretty agrevating having a truck so easy to work on, but every project becomes a major issue due to corrosion.

So the primary question still stands - any ideas on getting those pins out without having to replace my otherwise working calipers???

Try a punch (same size or smaller than the pins) and a small hammer. If you don't have a suitable punch handy then maybe you can find a nail and grind of the sharp end to use as a substitute.

The pins or the holes on the pads must be bent. Mine came out bt hand.
