My dad's 95 Disco TDI is not starting up, its definitely not the battery but it doesnt even try to start like if it had a dead battery. This does not happen all of the time though. How do I make sure it is the starter motor and how can I fix it? or should it just be replaced?

Joel:
A few things to check.
Battery charged fully?
Connections to battery tight and clean?
Ground from battery to chassis tight and clean?
Ground from chassis to engine block tight and clean?
Connections to starter motor clean and tight?

Next step, pull the starter motor and see if it spins on the bench-if not, toast!

Peace,
Paul

I recently had the same problem and I had to replace the starter. The teeth on the flywheel totally crushed the teeth on the starter. This caused it to only start sometimes. I thought it was an electrical problem but it turned out to be the starter. Take out the starter and take it to your local auto store and have them test it before you spend money on a diagnostic!! Also make sure all your connections leading to and from the starter are tight and clean.

It sounds like an earthing (grounding) strap problem. Another thing you may have to bear in mind is that the alarm/imobiliser may need some time to reset itself after the batery has been disconected. You'll have to find out exactly what type is fitted, but my friend's had a 30 minute reset time.
