Thanks to the great info I have found here I have decided to get a 2003 disco then modify it with a 2-3" OME lift (haven't decided yet) and a TMJ bar with winch. I am planning to go with 265/75/16 tires.
So the new SE model comes with 18" tires...should I just tell the dealer to swap them for the 16s?
This will be my only vehicle, so would a 2" lift be better for everyday driving, or will there not be much difference between the 3"? I am told this setup will yield 10-12mpg...what do you guys get?
And finally, (sorry for so many questions) Do these mods void the warranty? Ho Chung told me it depends on the dealer (I'm in Boston)...what's your experience?

Thanks for any information,
Jamil

Jamil,

The 16" tires/wheels swap will depend on the dealer. Some dealers grant the request, while others balk at it. I think you could make a fair case for it as some '03 S owner in Boston would probably want the 18" tires/wheels. Another alternative is to ask your salesperson to match you up with someone who has (or is) purchasing an S model. I'm sure an arrangement could be worked out.

As to mods affecting warranty...it depends. The dealer/manufacturer can only deny a warranty claim for a part that was modified, or a related system part that may have been affected. So, if your suspension is modified, your dealer cannot deny a warranty claim for, say, an engine valve.

That being said, some dealers are more mod-friendly than others. You may want to find out where the Boston-area LR owners who off-road buy their cars.

Good luck,
-ema

Jamil, which dealer are you talking to in Boston? I had a modified DII and had it serviced at Peabody (I bought the car at auction). They never gave me any issues. Mine was an ACE model with 2" OME lift and 265 tires. I would drop a bunch of beers or whatever in on the service guys from time to time to butter them up.

I know a few guys who go to Hanover. Since they are a newer and smaller dealer, it seems like they are also cool with modded trucks. They may be the most willing to do a wheel swap.

I would stay away from Metro-west. I have only ever heard bad things about those guys. Specifically their LR techs.

If your looking for a competent local rover mechanic that know his shit about mods, talk to Alan Elliott at Cityside Garage (www.citysidegarage.com)in Holliston. Things that a dealer wants mucho dinero to do... He is the only person that services my D90 and has installed just about every mod on it. He also did the lift and tires on my old DII.

David,
I am a student in Boston, but my home is in western MA. I was thinking to buy it either from Metro-West or LR Simsbury, CT. But I will be here for the next 4 years so maybe Peabody will be better for their services.

Any thoughts on the 2" vs. 3" lift?

Jamil, I would run a search on the 2 vs. 3" lift here. It's been discussed to death.

From what I've read, going over 2" on the dII "may" result in the expected driveline vibes and necessary changes to adapt to the change in driveline angles.

From my personnal experience, the 2" OME HD lift was drop in and worked perfectly. Even with ACE.

Jamil,

I have a '03 disco, with 2" OME HD lift. I'm very happy with the lift I received. I don't know about the 3" lift, but I don't have any problems with my driveline. Also, I drove my truck with 265/75/R16 (goodyear MT/R) for few weeks before the lift, and I didn't experience any rubbing. As far as warranty is concerned, the dealer has to prove that the mods made to the truck effected the problem with your truck. If they are trying to pull a fast one on you, take them to court. (they won't want to go to court, unless they KNOW that they are right).

Thanks Damien. I am going to go with the 2" lift. I think it wil suite me best. How are the MT/R tires on road? Would it be better to get some BFG all-terrain tires instead? Thanks David, I think I may go with ACE for its added benefits since I'll be on road most of the time. I'm glad they work well together.

Jamil
