I actually posted pics of this in the dreaded "new bumper" thread but I wanted to post them in DiscoTech for those who have the sense (which I don't) to avoid the GNT catfigths.

Just completed installing tie down brackets to organize my new Underwater Kinetics cases that I got a screamin deal on. I did a lot of research in the archives about the tie down brackets and it was very helpful. Went to tons of places but eventually went with the brackets from a 2003 Suburban. I also had trouble finding a full rear cargo mat for the disco so I got a fullsize chevy/gmc rubber bed liner and cut it to my exact shape. I'm very happy with it. Just mounted up my airtank too. Most of the stuff with the exception of the brackets was either a really good deal or CB depending on your point of view. I bought my cases from the factory (it's local) at a parking lot dive sale and I put together my tank at Airgas.

I'm wondering if anyone else has mounted bolts thru the wheel wells? I've got the bolts as short as possible, but I'm worried a little about rub. Any thoughts?

these pics show the stacks as low as possible. I can also pile it all in the rear or where the back seats used to be and it just fits all the way to the roof. All my gear is completely contained including my hi-lift which is now strapped to the front seat mounts, so that in the unfortunate event of a roll over or other accident, nothing is moving at all.

here it is:

Bet you would have a hell of a time getting through airport security checkpoints with those....not that there is much wheeling next to airports, in most cases.

well john, lets say he's screeming deal was $1 each per case. it's hard to argue that those cases are not worth a dollar.

value is a personal thing. if i could buy a ramsey rep8000 POS winch for a dollar i'd pcik up 20 of them. use them as trow away winch and presents for my friends.

Jack, have you figured out how to deal with your inferiority complex so that you won't get your panties in a bunch when someone critiques your setup for better or worse?

Pattern? Which one? As an aspect of my job, I sit down every week and anlyze the persona's of users and customers. Here's what I see on Dweb for the most part:

-We have three categories.
1) Those seeking information or assistance.
2) Those looking to show off their goods (perceived).
3) Those looking to shoot the shit.

What I *think* John is getting at (as a sub of the above number 2):
1) I'm cheap and want to show off my CB stuff, who cares if anyone asked me to show it off.
2) I've got booty fab, booty gear and booty design going for me, how about you guys?
3) Hot pink straps are in... (abstract what you need from this).
4)People, check out the neat setup (although nobody asked about it...).

Of course, all very similar to previous threads such as catchermaster, convince me to buy an LR, etc.

Personally I think it's pretty nice that he has hard cases for all of that stuff, and that it's all tied down.

I definitely appreciate the fact that he was thinking outside of the box with the Suburban tie down points.

I also like the fact that he went with cases that (IMO) aren't the best (I personally like Pelican cases), BUT that he was able to get inexpensively and will fit his need. I see a lot of people around who get 'x' and 'y' just because they saw someone else cool who had it, not because they NEEDED it.

All in all, not bad (I don't even mind the pink straps)...but I want to see it after he's been living in it for a week.

I think you'll find that you will need to have at least one of those cases be your 'sacrificial lamb' so to speak, and either leave it loose, or get some kind of a soft case that you can get in and out of easily and rapidly.

You guys would probably die if you knew I carried my D1x in the center tuffy box console 80% of the time while I'm out tooling around. The camera plus any lens I might have on it for general shooting adds up to about 6500 clams. I need to get to it often and quickly, so the Tuffy fits the bill. Now...the other cameras? Always in the Pelican cases...sometimes strapped down, mostly not.

Nice job. I'm thinking of re-designing the rear of the LWB the way that Armando Nieto did his Disco.

Oh no, Jaime, he got a "screaming deal" on those cases. How could it possibly be a waste of money?

Jack, would you mind quantifying the "screaming deal?"

Jack- yeah! Taking a breather from the bumber thread too.

TECHNICAL answer to question asked - If you haven't already done so with the bolts protruding into the wheel well, take an angle grinder and take the bolts down to within about 1-1/2 thread turns above the nut. If you may still have clearance problems, I think you have more issues than can be addressed on this board.

Some of you guys are a bunch of f'in blowhards.

Waste of money? Just because you wouldn't spend the money on those products doesn't make it a waste of money. So what if he saved a buck on an inferior product; if it does the job for him, then more power to him. It is HIS LR, remember? Are you so f'in snobbish to realize that the top of the line isn't what everybody needs?

And tech content? Plenty of it. It serves as a perfect example for those sheeple who don't realize you can outfit your LR with 1)parts not from a LR (kudos on the Suburban parts), and 2) you don't need to buy every product from LR specific retailer, whether or not they are always pimpin' their shit with condescending undertones.
So what if he didn't tell you how to do anything WRT tech...the pictures speak volumes to answer countless questions somebody else may have to do similar work to their LR.

Jack, it looks good and kudos for saving money while doing it.

Ok. thanks all.
seems like my attempts to separate this thread from the bumper one have failed.

I posted this mostly along the lines of this thread which inspired me to do this stuff, but it no longer active otherwise I would have tacked this on the end:

../17/20872.html>

seems to me there's been a long standing practice of posting pictures of your truck or gear on this board, it's only recently that attacking anyone who does so has come into vogue.

However, I'm willing to read all of the responses, but I can't guarantee that I'm going to care equally about all of them.

to answer questions:

I paid $20 each for the 1622s and 1122s (the larger ones) and $10 for the briefcase and $7 for the camera case. A grand total of $97 new in box from the factory. I know, I got totally screwed.

The straps are red, the picture changes the color.

Reed,
Thanks for the input. I've already got them down to the nut, but I'm curious if anyone has ever had rubbing problems. I only run 245/75s so I'm thinking they may never touch, but if they did stuff it would be at very slow speeds resulting in little if any damage.

Michael,
What did Armando Nieto do? Now I'm curious.
Right now my Canon EOS Elan 7 is in that small beige case. Not very easy to get at all, but it's not so dangerous a projectile that I couldn't move it towards the front.

which is why there is a section called "General-Non Tech".

or maybe "Photo Gallery".

see nothing "Technical" about a bunch of fucking boxes in the back of any vehicle.

or maybe my definition of "Tech info" is different than some.

Cry me a river. There's so much semi-technical/non-technical BS on this board, I bet you pipe up in every one of them to make sure whoever started the thread knows they are in the wrong place. And to further substantiate your position, every reponse you post is technical and never OT...

BTW,

"I'm wondering if anyone else has mounted bolts thru the wheel wells? I've got the bolts as short as possible, but I'm worried a little about rub. Any thoughts?"

There's your tech. It was in his first post...did you miss it? Do you have an answer to help Jack out, or are you going to continue playing net cop? If so, have a donut and go patrol somewhere else.

Where do the bolts protrude into the wheelwells? You should only rub (if at all) on the rear backside of the well with 245/75's. Still, I'd be leary of having a metal protrusion where it could contact the rubber....

The bolts come down in the upper forward quadrant (as in the 4th pic) and right on the top.
There is a slightly shorter bolt head going through a plate on the interior of the wheelwell that is covered in the rubberized coating on the inside of the wheel well (from the factory). Is there something I could use for a similar covering to smooth the rough edges on the bolts I have added?

as is I don't have anything on the rear backside where I have trimmed.

Ahhh...I see the tiedown now in the pic. Do you call that tiedown "The Shocker"? :-) You may find that chicks keep getting in & out of the backseat for no apparent reason, and guys start saying "I don't want to go to prison, mommy" when they get out. LOL, ok...enough!

Maybe snap a pic of the wheelwell up there & post it. Maybe something other than a nut & bolt would be a better idea - like a smooth or convex hex head bolt. Or just paint it black and fuhgettaboutit.

P.S. fuck you you asshole you suck (I just want to fit in)

I used 1" webbing and a slip buckle and a slidelock on each seat. You can get that stuff at REI or anywhere similar. There are holes in the inner rear seat mounts that they thread through. It's not exactly locked in place like the cases, but you can get it pretty tight and it's not going to fly around and hit anything and the jack weighs so much it doesn't really bounce around. I thought about bolting hi-lift mounts to the slant face where the rear seats go, but I laid everything out so that I could put the seats back and that would have gotten in the way.

Jack, man that sounds like a helluva deal. Beats the shit outta the crappy $24 contico box I got from lowes. Is that deal still available anywhere?

Just think, I could get some good cases *AND* a new set of RTE sliders for the same cost as a set of pelicans.

drool.

Jesus H Christ stop the fucking whining. For every bashing post there is a post encouraging you and others to do like things. Thats how it works. WHy does everyone simply focus on the bashing posts ? That make any sense ? SHOULD everyone just tell you how lovely they think your junk is ? I hate that shit , if I have some junk and some dude tells me its the cats ass I pretty much know right away the guy is a moron. Some people bash , some people praise , dont start bitching about it... Thats more annoying then either and bothers me much more then that horrible Disco/Hummer dissaster in the other thread. Just participate and take it as it comes. Its the fucking internet man and once you hit the power button all these assholes are gone anyway.... If this shit dictates your life you got bigger issues then people knocking your cheap cases.....

Kyle,
Trust me, I'm not offended by this thread. I knew there would be some people who just jumped on and took swings for no reason, and some valid criticsim but I also got some answers to my question and some praise and advice from the one person on this board who's opinion I had in mind when I did this.

Did I read somewhere (maybe last year) that there were already holes in the cargo area for tiedowns. I never actually did go out and find them.

Hi Greg
Yep there is threaded holes in the rear section, two right at the back and two just under the edge of the rear seats, betweeen the arches.
I have the genuine bolt in eyes which swivel, came with a springy net and two ratchet tie downs.
Wouldn`t work for the space under the rear seats, but then again how many people rip out these seats?

My seats are gone, And as far as the bolt protusion issue, why not have the head of the bolt in the tire area and the nut in the passenger compartment, i cant see how something that sticks down 3/8 of an inch could ever touch the tire, i bring home more mud than that in the same location, i think that your safe,

Thanks. So if I just lift up the carpet I should see the holes?
What are they filled with? I am asking, because I haven't been near my disco for quite a while, so I can't just go out and look.

Greg-

I can't remember if the holes in the actual deck have/had caps on them, but the under carpet has cutout postitions on the underside so you can make "neater" holes in it that are supposed to be in alignment.
