Brakes not working right on my 96 disco. 4 mo new DB rotors and Genuine LR pads. When I apply the brake I get a hissing sound from the piston behind the brake pedal arm. I changed the non return valve on the servo with no change. Peddle feels like my 74 cadillac when the car would die and I had to stop with no power. Any help would be appreciated, I would like to avoid a trip to the dealer if possible.

with vehicle not running, pump brake pedal several times, hold down firmly, start engine, dont rev, if pedal does not move, your vacuum booster is bad, if pedal does drop to floor, problem is elsewhere!

Check the vacuum hose that runs to the master cylinder. I had a similar no power brake problems and I missed that hose at first glance. It was still in place, but it wasnt firmly attached, and thus, no vacuum pump = no brakes. Check that hose for cracks, since it's a hard plastic, and check where it meets the Ram Housing/Plenum cover for holes in the rubber hose that connects it to the nipple.

Jared and Peter, thanks for the responses, Peter I did your test when I start the vehicle there is very little movement from the peddle other than the pressure from my foot, I do get slight movement down which I relate to the hissing sound, would that mean a bad booster ? Jared I checked the hose and all seems to be fine there. If it is the booster,is there a rebuild kit, new price seems expensive.
