So I went off-roading on my terrible 235/70R16 Firestones - like always. But the other day I was at the shop and my mechanic says, "when your treads get that low you start getting punctures."

...Yes.

I was crossing a small, but steep culvert with water running through it. Literally, it was only 4 feet across, but it had the angles to scrape up the brushguard and hitch reciever, so I was going really slow, slipped forward off a wet rock and my FDS tire simply popped. Rock stabbed it just like knife, right through the main part of the tread. I put the original spare on, and got off the trail just fine. But now we are shopping for tires.

I have BFG A/T's on my IIa, and really like them. But from research I have decided to go with 215/85r16's for the Discovery. They are supposed to be about 1.4" taller and thinner so I don't have to worry about trimming the body. (I have a 2" lift)

But they do not make BFG 215's! So I saw some Coopers, just like these: http://www.roadmastertires.com/intl-ltsuv.asp?id=217 But they DID NOT say Durango on them, they said Cooper Discoverer L/T or something like that.

My second choice is the 245/75r16 but according to the Discoweb gods they are wide enough to require trimming.

Anyway, I want a tough squared off look, not too tready, with strong sidewalls, tall and skinny - I like the way the taller thin tires ride and look. The BFG's are expensive, Coopers are a better price.

Help and hints for other possible sizes? I have read the threads on BFG and Cooper, and have been surpised by the polarization on BFG's "Good" "Not Good"

Also, anyone with photos of their Discovery on Coopers or BFG's would be appreciated - I figure if I am spending this much money I have the right to be a little vain!!

If you have a 2" lift then just get 235/85-16s. You can just space the fenders out w/ kyle's method if you really don't want to trim (assuming you are running stock rims). If you are really into the rover thing then why are you scared of a few more mods to fit tires???

Oh and FWIW I think the tread on the new BFG A/Ts sucks.

Just to prevent any confusion, what I meant was "stock off-set rims"

Those might be just a few tenths of an inch too large, and 5 mm too wide - I'm picky!!

Anyway, I am glad I got the "old style" tread on my IIa, they are new, but from last year or something.

I am more concerned with getting a tread pattern that won't make a lot of noise on the road, but that will do good off road and doesn't look too monsterish - I like the BFG M/T's but my wife does not. And they are expensive.

I like the looks of the 235/85 myself as well, but run 245/75 Yokohama Geolander AT+IIs for the daily driving. The Yokos were pretty cheap at www.tires.com and even got free shipping. Sorry to hear you popped a tire. Here is a pic of the 235/85s though on my truck with 2" of lift and no cutting or rubbing.. Later. RS
