Hopefully some of you tech experts are on the web this weekend instead of wheeling. I tried searching for similiar symptoms but could not find the exact same thing. I went to start my disco this morning, used the remote to unlock the doors as always, started to turn the key in the ignition, got to the ACC position and all the normal lights on the dash came on, then all of a sudden just as I was going to start it, everything shutdown or shorted out? Basically all electrical power vanished. I proceeded to try the remote buttons to see if the factory security system went haywire, nothing happened right away, then after a few minutes, I pressed the lock button on the remote and everything came back on along with the doors locking. I figured I could at least drive it now and then figure out what happened. I started it up pulled out of the driveway and noticed as I shifted into D that the idle was going up and down out of control? When I started to drive it, the rpm's started going up and down and it wanted to just take off. This sounds like a similar problem I have read about before on dweb, I just can't find the thread. Anyone know what is causing this? |

I had this problem occur back in January and have finally found a few people with the same problems. It seems to be happening in 96-97 D1s. Like the battery is disconnected and no power. I think it has something to do with the ground cable that goes from the battery to the starter. The alarm system thinks that the starter juice is being cut so it engages the immobilization system. Works pretty good... I cleaned the connectors off with a wire brush. It's in a location where it can get gummed up pretty good with dirt and corrosion on the inside of the passenger side wheel well. You will need to take the starter heat guard off in order to take the cable off and clean it. My suggestion is to replace it completely. If you run into this problem again before getting around to cleaning the contacts, you can reset the alarm by arming it and disarming it several times. However you may not have power at all to arm it. Wait a few hours and try again. I think the alarm CPU has a timer that reactivates the electrical system after so many hours, but I'm not sure. Just my experience. I haven't had the problem reoccur since I cleaned the contacts. Good luck! |

i would say check battery cables and make sure your battery isn't dead. |

Thanks for ths suggestions, here is my update. I kept trying the key remote and it finally locked and then unlocked the doors, and everything came back on and all electrical systems seem normal. The wierd part was that the first time I drove it afterwards is the irregular RPM's jumping up and down? Any tips on why that electrical problem would effect the engine RPM's Thanks DWEB! |

Wierd erratic Tachs are usually a sign that the alternator is on the way out. The rev counter gets its data from the Alternator |
