I'm soon to replace my air filter and plan to upgrade to a K&N of course, However I would like to know more about a COLD AIR INTAKE with a CONE FILTER...

How do they work?
Do they work?
Are they worth it?

Lets hear it...

Jim-

I agree. The snorkle is the way to go. Nice clearer air in the dustiest of places.

Ryan-

Of course if you don't want all kinds of people asking where you have driven your Rover, and "Does it go undewater?" type questions. You may want to search the archives for AirForce One, or something like that. It is a device much like you described, and there have been a couple of threads about it.

John Davis automotive in Sydney Australia makes a cold air scoop for under the hood for about $40 I think.

just to add to the stir, i recently remived my K&N filter after recieving some advice about the air flow versus filteration qualities of that filter. yes it does allow alot of air to move but smaller particulate matter will make it thru as well. most of that real tiny shit won't make a hole lot of problem but over time there is the risk of dirt build on the MAF, this is bad, real bad. my MAF has acculmated enough grime from what slipped by that it can be seen with the naked eye. the power gain is margainal and it has a negative effect on fuel econ. in my racing days i ran the K&N exclusivly, but that was in a real controled environment and the carbs were rebuilt after every event so there was never a build up of dirt. in the day to day drive that will not be the case. so IMHO skip the K&N buy the snorkle.

I use a K&N, but Mike has some valid points, and I'm not getting into the K&N vs. Paper contraversy here.

What I will say though is that any underhood cold air box is still Under-the-Hood. Yhe cold air box might pick up the air just behind the grill, but the one I saw (Using the cone type K&N) only lifted the intake a few inches.

Look under the hood (bonnet) after riding on a dusty road in a caravan of Discos and see what the engine bay looks like. The engine bay is a dirty place, even if driving on a dirt track all by yourself. Get your engine air from another scource.

If you want cleaner air, get a snorkle, and use whatever filter you feel justified in using. Some feel that the Safari snorkle gives a bit of ram air when driving on the freeway.
