I have a 95 4.0 that has mild low speed vibration (25-35mph) and severe vibration at higher speeds (55-65mph) At other speeds it disapears. It seems less noticable when you drive for a while buts its always there. Any hints on where to look first? tires, bearings ,drive axles? I cant tell where its coming from I feel it in the steering wheel, pedals and seats.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

And tires have been balanced recently?

recheck the balance. If it was a chain shop probably not done correctly check to see weight on inside and outside of rim. What about alignment also?

I'm going to get them balanced and rotated tommorow. I,ll rule that out first. Then I,ll try alignment. The truck was poorly maintained before I bought it, and it always had a mild vibration. I,m hoping the worst case is a drive shaft and not the transfer case or diffs. Is it possible to check for bearing play without pulling the axle?

Do you mean wheel bearings? If so yes just jack that side up and push on the wheel. It shouldn't rock from side to side. If so then you need to repack or replace bearings.

If you have any reason to think it is a driveshaft check it now and do yourself a favor. I had a vibration similar to yours on my 95 RRC except mine seemed a little more severe. On the drive home to diagnose and repair it the rear u-joint on the front driveshaft let go and the shaft smashed a hole in the transmission and destroyed it. It turned a $50 2 hour repair into a $1500 24 hour repair and that was with used parts and me doing all the work. I guess the moral of the story is don't let it go any longer than you need to.

Ron, my driveline vibrates at 25-30 mph and humms at 65-70 mph (because of my 3" lift). I have to agree with Patrick that it might be the u-joints.

Keep us posted,

John C.

I would suspect u-joints (esp at around 100K miles) or locked viscous coupler.

Thanks guys,
I had the tires re-balanced and no change.
Next step, I,ll check the shaft couplers.
