My brothers '95 Disco I (3.9)is making a horrible sound. Soon as you crank it up its idle is extremely low, and a blunt popping and knocking sound can be heard coming from the engine. Dealer told me it was a cam or something knocking together? Is there any truth to this? What do i have to do to fix it? Any input would be of help. Thanks a lot. -Garrett |

Dealers like to pass off any engine noise as "cam knock" or "cam walk" -- which is basically a harmless anoyance on the early 3.9 motors and hasn't even been a problem on Rover motors since the 3.9 Litre "B" started coming out in '94 - '95. The later motors have a thrust plate over the camshaft and a peg on the inside of the front cover to keep the camshaft from "walking" back and forth a few mms and and making a knocking sound against the front cover. Sounds like the typical line of BS from the dealership. The knocking or tapping sound you describe could be almost anything. You might get a mechanic's stethescope to trace where the sound is coming from or you could take off the valve covers and idle it for a short time to see if the noise is from a problem in the upper valve train. Good luck! ---Norm |

Thanks a lot norm. Paul (mechanic at the dealer) also stated that he has a '95 and his makes the same noise. He mentioned that it was harmless but there was a known cure for the sound. He said that the cams are knocking together but "they won't go anywhere" and no harm is being done. My brother is wanting to upgrade to a 4.0 V8 (even though his smokes my '98 for some reason) and a couple was concerned about the noise. If i can fix the noise then i can help him sell the car. Is there a cure for the knock? Thanks a lot for your input. |

My '95 made that noise, and it actually was the "camshaft walk" issue. This was fixed, under warranty, by installation of the cap on the end of the camshaft. |

Sounds more like an oil pump failure or bypass valve (?). Sounds like a minor strip down is in order asap otherwise you'll be looking at a completely new engine..... which might not be a bad idea |
