Hey gang,

changed diff fluids on the '99 RR today. Had a couple of surprises, and am VERY glad I did this. I would appreciate some feedback on the issues mentioned below.

Front diff fluid seemed a bit low, and it appears the rear facing side of the diff is leaking (?).. I'm not sure where exactly yet. Any ideas what likely candidates are and instructions/pointers on how to repair/reseal this?

Drain plug had small amounts of magnetic dust/film on it. Nothing dramatic, though, so, looks like I caught this in time.

Rear diff fluid was right level, but.. uh-oh.. in a nasty frappuccino/latte/tea-with-milk coloring. :-( I have no idea how water got into the diff. At least under my watch I don't see how that's possible. And considering how (relatively) far up the breather is, and even if it were submerged,.. I don't see how it can easily take on water. Any ideas?

Jacked up the right rear to try to drain as much as possible of the emulsion out, and attempted to flush some of it by squirting new fluid in from the fill hole. Will check this again next weekend, and swap fluids again.

Magnetic dust/film on drain plug was less than the front and it looks like no harm was done so far. *knock on wood*

So, any comments on either issue?

If 60K mile service includes diff service, that would be the last time they were checked at the dealer. We're at 63K miles now. I'm in the process of looking through the records.

Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Christian

PS: Oh, yes, Mobil 1 gear lube was used for the change.

Front: The seal at the pinion(u-joint) is leaking, which is a common nusiance with Land Rovers. You have to disconnect the front driveshaft, then remove a big nut from the pinion(hopefully yours will come loose without an air wrench), then replace the seal.

Rear: The seals near your wheel bearings are leaking (water in). Remove rear hubs and replace all the seals.

Randall, thanks for the reply.

Is the procedure for both items pretty straightforward or anything in particular I need to watch out for?

Thanks,
Christian
