I was lurking on pirate and I noticed the "stolen" section. An alarming number of these guys get there trucks stolen and many of them are not what would be called "desirable" to the uninformed eye. Of course, most of these guys live in Sac and Stockton and whatnot so theft might be a little more prevalent, but it got me thinking.

A shiny land rover seems like a lot more of a score for the common hood, so I wonder what the stats are on stolen rovers.

Most of them don't have alarms but a lot of them booty fabbed kill switches or the like. Do you all feel secure with your stock alarm? Has anyone done anything more eg lo-jack, starter interrupter, etc? I think I'd just keel over and die if someone stole my truck so now I'm paranoid.

Jack,
If a thief wants your truck they are more then likely going to get it. I lived in the central valley for awhile and parts disappear off your car or rig. Its a fact of life. That is why I pay for insurance. That being said lock your truck and don't leave anything to flashy in plain sight. Its hot in the summer there so I have a feeling alot of people have soft tops or leave their windows down too. Use common sense and hope the thief doesn't have a flatbed at his disposal.

Jack,

I second Jeremy. Our trucks have plenty of anti-theft features (say, both of my range rovers require some unorthodox methods to start), but it's all pointless if someone brings a flatbed.

I think resale of parts plays a large part in why thievs steal what they steal. I went with lo-jack for two reasons: lower insurance payments and the fact that when a theif steals a car they usually park it for a "cooling off period" in a public place so they can watch it. If no one claims it they then move it to a chop shop. That "cooling off period" is hopefully when they will find it.

They have busted some large chop shops due to them bringing a car with lo-jack in and then having the police use their gear to locate the car only to uncover the operation. If its gone any length of time,I dont want it back anyway

Jeez Garrett! Do you still get insurance if your truck is stolen (stripped or damaged), while the key is in the ignition. You don't in Oz.
Just curious.

not sure. my local state farm insurance agent is pretty laid back about things. wheneven i bust a headlight or glass in general he just tells me to go ahead and have it done and just drop the bill off at his office.
believe me if someone took off in my truck i would have 10 calls coming in within minutes from friends. the truck is well known around town. :-)

Wow, Garett where do you live??? And around what time do you go to sleep? LOL

The only alarm worth a shit is made by Smith & Wesson!

The club works pretty good too if you use it to crush the skull of the person trying to steal your rig, not so good if you use it the conventional way!

when garret says "around town" he means truck stops and adult boutiques were you can still have annonomys sex with a stranger without saying a word, they just see his truck and know what to do.

>shit. i park my truck with the keys in it 80% of the time where i live. it's kinda nice. well until someone takes it. then i guess i will be pissed.<

So have I for the last 25 years and never a problem….until about two weeks ago. Went outside to go to work and noticed my company truck had been ransacked. Pulled around the house and no Rover. Found it later that morning at the public pool next to where I work minus half a tank of gas. No major damage, appears some little dickweeds just went for a joyride.

The local police could have cared less, actually seemed put out by the whole thing. I could smash the front window of the police office with a well thrown rock, that’s why we didn’t worry too much about leaving the keys in it. Seems I had more respect for our local police force than did the perps and now I know why.

As for insurance coverage, we have State Farm and they have been great. Never said the first thing about us leaving the keys in it. Paid the full amount to have it towed to our dealer, and for a detailing inside and out and some minor damage incurred during said dickweeds joyride. Don’t like paying that premium, but they really did provide excellent service.
