My manual, diesel Disco has a "wading plug" both in the bell-housing and the timing belt case. They stop water and mud from getting into both spaces which could cause problems, but both need removing periodically to check for any internal leaks. Your owners hand book should tell you what needs doing.

Tod
most cars don't have them fitted from new you have to fit them. You don't need to let water out they are to stop water getting in,at service time you remove them to let any oil that has leaked out of the gearbox/engine rear main seal drain.
