we have recnetly developed a nasty oil leak on our 97 disco. it is coming from the front of the oil sump. im goin to replace the gasket as i am asumming this is the prob. is it easy to do so without lifting the engine out? and can i get some sort of aftermarket gasket instead of the cruddy leather one they come with? |

I would suggest if you are planning to drop the pan you should clean out the sump and oil pick up screen of sludge... You don't have to lift the motor... you can take it out from underneath ... just remove the four stabilizer bolts and let it swing down. You can use RTV (hi temp) as an after market gasket. hope that helps. |

Don't use RTV unless it says it is safe for oxygen sensors. Any vapors coming from the RTV get recycled thru the PCV valve and silicone is deadly to oxygen sensors. Go to Napa and get a gasket maker called "The Right Stuff", it works for everything, is oxygen sensor safe and unlike RTV there is no waiting for it to cure, use it and go. Mike G. 96 Disco SD |
