Hey All,
I'm about to close a deal on my first Disco. Its a 2000 SE7 with 30,000 miles on it. It seems to drive great, but I have noticed a potential issue. There is a distinct ticking under the hood. It is present all of the time and gets faster when you step on the gas. My first instinct is that the fan is rubbing something, the noise does not get louder with acceleration(like fan suck), just faster. Any ideas or areas that I should check first? Thanks.

This site has helped me make an educated purchase decision.

Jason

Ticking...soft or loud?

Shorting ignition wire?

lifter
rocker arm - loud tick
valve

Well, I hope you learned to get a rig that still has a warrenty.

Hmmm...hard to say without actually hearing the tick. It may just be the fuel pump relay if it is a fairly quiet tick. It may also be a problem with a lifter. Some of the 99's and 2K's had to have heads replaced, but the percentages were pretty low. As Eric said, just make sure there is some warranty left or at least have the noise checked out.

could be a cracked manifold or leaking gasket.

Yeah I still have some warranty left. I'm going to see if the dealer will get it checked out before I buy. The ticking is of moderate volume. Loud enough to hear when parked, but quiet enough that I can't hear it while driving with the window rolled down and no music on.

It ticks about 3 times a second at idle RPM's. I would expect it to be more often if it were a lifter.

Fuel injection maybe? Or are the V8s EFI? I'm not a mechanic - just an idea...

I was going to say the same as Garrett. My right manifold had a small crack in it and it ticked all the time until I got it fixed. It got louder as time went and the crack got bigger.

Sounds like rocker arms from here.

After having a little more time to check things out I have new details.

It is NOT fan noise.
It is less obvious when the Disco is first started. It builds in volume after a minute or so of idling. It is coming from the engine manifold. My money is on valves or lifters. I put in a tank of Premium (in case the dealer was not) and a bottle of stp fuel Tx. We'll see how she sounds in the am. Thanks

I plan to have it looked into, but am not really sure how to go about it. I would like to have my LR dealer look at it before I buy it. Since it is under warranty, could I or the Used Car Dealer I'm buying from drive it in for a once over? It is still under the original warranty so would any fee be attached?

you could certainly take it to any LR dealer and pay them to completely check the truck over. not a bad idea regardless.

If its under warranty, what kind of dollar amount are you looking at for a "check up"?

Garrett, Thanks for all of the great advice and help.

not sure what LR charges for a general check. most likely around $100. cheap insurance for sure. they know what to look for.
if it is under warranty then no worries, but if you have a crack manifold many times they can be welded. depends on where the crack is and all. but to have one replaced is not a big deal. relatively quick job.

Put in some nice high grade gas and some injector cleaner with no difference in the pinging sound. I think a trip to the LR dealer will be in line before I buy. I've also notice more wear and tear on the vehicle after driving it around.

The asking price is $22,000 for the following:
Disco II 2000
31000 miles
Cold Weather Package
Tow Package
Premium sound
Jump Seats
LR Brush Bar
Tires (street tires 2 are new and 1 is nearly bald)
few small dents and scrapes in body
some minor damage to leather Interior
many dirt/ash? marks around sunroofs
Clean smelling

What would you pay for the same? I feel like I may be overpaying.
