I lost a fan blade on my D1, Dealer price for the replacement blade (blade only, not the viscous unit): $240

DAP price: $45 (Genuine Land Rover part)

I don't mind somebody making a living, but if I'm going to get robbed, I prefer to have a gun in my face while it's happening.

The dealerships deserve every bit of bad-mouthing they get.

Jim

Jim , How about $212 for the new trailer wiring harness that is really .....$20-$30 at U-haul, and that is the part only. You know it is at least 1-2 hours of labor at $100+ per hour. -Jim

Think about this, Land Rover has been loosing money for the past several years, it's only because of Ford Motor Comp. that they are still around. All I can say, is be a smart shopper, and don't pay the dealer prices if you don't have to, all other car dealerships also increase the prices on their parts....

That fan blade also fits up-to 1987 Jaguar XJ6 Series III. An out of production car that the aftermarket supports pretty well. DAP's got the right price.

even your local garage typically makes 30% over their cost on all parts. but LR seems to tip the till a little more. :-)

All Dealerships add some cost. My local VW dealer seems to think my Golf is made out of pure gold! However, It's that pesky overhead problem they have....meaning that they have to keep their doors open. Business is Business.

Everytime I break something, which lately has been lights; I just get on the ole www and start searching. For example, my latest purchase were the front blinkers for the Pig. Dealer wanted $57 and AB wanted $35. So guess where I went?:-)

Now when I was living in Philly last year, I had no problem paying for LR parts from Main Line. Why? They were 3 miles from where I was living. Being grateful they were so close, I paid for the convience so-to-speak. But now I am back in BF North Carolina and the nearest dealer is an hour away. So now I do the www thing, unless it's a warranty of course.

I agree with Ron's comment about genuine or Bearmach crap.
I've bought cheap gaskets by Bearmach... they didn't fit unless torn or modified by the end-user-me. I hope their fans are better.
Get the metal fan.

I agree with Ron. Just because the part fits your Land Rover and was sold by a vendor that specializes in Land Rovers doesn't mean the part is a Genuine Land Rover part. You can scrounge around all you like, but don't think that you got the same part for 1/5th the price. You're just fooling yourself.

economics tells us that there are people who dont mind paying out the nose for GLR parts and GLR labor; Evidence: someone is charging a price and someone is willingly paying, hence the reason it took a week to have a relay and high beam switch serviced at the dealer... It is a discussion group such as this that can sway a portion of the economics that seems to be plagueing the Land Rover community. customer service and professionalism are important, but so is the bottom line... thanks for your discussion and keep up the good work.

Land Rover Portland charges $20 for a headlight bulb. The auto parts store charges $4.

"You can scrounge around all you like, but don't think that you got the same part for 1/5th the price."

You can indeed get the same part for 1/5th the price!

Yeah, I saw the metal fan/Autozone solution EXACTLY 24 hrs too late, had already bought the one from DAP (rats).
The fan I got has Land Rover logo and ERR part# molded into the unit and is the exact same unit as the original that I replaced so I'm hoping it's not the Bearmach unit. I figure the first one went 100K+ so I should be good for another 100K.

By the way, now that I've changed the fan, I'm wondering what the proper method of stopping the pully from turning is?

My method of bleeding, swearing and throwing wrenches, although it did eventually work, seemed to be the 'wrong' way.

Hey Dan,

$20 for a bulb? That sounds about right. I went with the Hella H4 +50% bulbs for like $12 a piece from Susquehannah.
