For those who have dogs in the rear cargo area, what do you do to keep them cool. Its getting quite hot, and I know that it'll be really difficult to keep them from overheating soon. I have three large dogs. I usually have to put the rear seats up. I don't need it all the time, but when I'm transporting them around, it would be nice to know that they're not cooking in the back.

I was thinking about devising a way to pipe some AC from the center armrest by using some vaccum cleaner hose. I want it detachable and non-perminant. How do you fit a round pipe into a small rectangular hole?

Porter

actually I have something like this for work
It made for people like myself who sit in a cruiser for 8 hours at a time, with a bullet proof vest on. Because we put them on so tight, they really get steaming hot and sitting in the A/c doesnt help much.

So some genius cop thought of this hose, that is about 3 feet long. On one end , it has a rite angle peice of plastic, you can hang on the collar of your shirt ( hence aiming the air down your shirt) Obviously , the other end sticks into the grate covering the a/c vent and makes a pipeline to your shirt with the cool air

If you really want to do it, and your not to concerned with the "ghetto factor" you could get a long peice of dryer hose and a small clip to clip it to the vent. this would pipe nice cold air back to your pooches, but you could easily compact it into the size of about nothing.

In the K-9 vehicles, they have equipted a rear AC blower, that sits the in the foot well to keep the cage cool in the summer, but if its really THAT hot, leave them home with some ice cubes in the water bowl.

The dryer hose/vaccum cleaner hose what what I was thinking too.

I train for Search and Rescue, and when we do we try to get to the site really, really early and get all the dogs worked before its gets really hot.

The way the process works is, depending on how many dogs there are, and they're level of training - it can take anywhere between minutes to many hours before a single dog is finished training. We try to work as many as we can at once but we're often limited by the sheer area of the training site. Sometimes we have a lot of dogs to work and so many people simply leave the AC on in their cars while they wait their turn. Someone stays with the cars at all times to monitor them, but even with the AC blasting, its doesn't seem to reach the back area even with the rear seats up.

I'm just anticipating one of these days when I have to try to figure out some way to keep them cool while they wait for their turn to train or after they're done and its someone else's turn.

The "ghetto factor" doesn't really bother me, as long as I can remove it afterwards. I'm in the process of cutting out those reflective bubblewrap to fit in the windows so to reflect the sun out. That way I can fit them in when I'm parked but take them off when I'm driving.

perhapse just a small fan that can plug into the cigarette lighter would help push the cold air up front back a little further. That would be simpler than running a hose.

Carter, what happened? Did your post count odometer roll over??

AS far as the dryer hose goes it would have to be a very air-tight seal for the blower to push it to the back(I think) I think some dark tint on the glass and a fan might work o.k.

Put very dark tints on your rear windows, alpines and rear window. It actually does keep the inside much cooler.
