I have a 99 D1 with about 52,000 miles. I noticed when driving from NYC to North Carolina that the speedometer bounced once (traveling a steady 75 and the speedo dropped down to about 40). Is the infamous Lucas electrics warning me of some impending doom? It only saw it one time. I watched it pretty closely for the next 700 miles and it has not happened again.
Thanks,
Brian

Bouncing tach and speedometer are tell tale signs of alternator failure, take it from someone who it has happened to twice within 6 months. Be wary!

Thanks guys. I'll check the altenator on Saturday. More quality time with the Rover.

Hey Brian,

My 97D1 did this and it was the VSS. You may want to consider replacing that first, it is much cheaper. There are many posts on DWEB that point to the VSS as the cause of the speedo jumping. If it is the Tach, that is more likely to be the Alternator.
