I read the archives and I don't think it could be anything else. My front tires just started chirping in turns over the last couple of days. Not every turn, usually from a stop sign into a tight turn. I've heard a low thundering sound in slow turns for a while which I attributed to the lift. What's the best way to verify for sure without pulling the VC out? Take out the front drive shaft and see if the VC does what?

if it's siezed up , which it sounds like i think the test goes like this:

"remover old VC unit, refit with new" if symptoms go away , that was it.

you taking the lt230 plung? or keeping with the sexy smooth BW?

Haven't decided yet. I'll weigh the costs. I can get a VC from the UK for a reasonable cost. An LT230 with CDL is mighty sexy though :-)

Meanwhile, if I take out the front drive shaft, I remember reading some way to check the VC for seizure. If it turns by hand it's OK? Or what's the test?

Just raise one front wheel and try turning it slowly. If it has siezed, remove the front prop shaft and slap on a 2x4 sticker until it's fixed/replaced.

Bruce.

Well, I jacked a front wheel and it wouldn't budge except for the usual slop. So, I pulled out the front drive shaft and all is quiet. Couldn't duplicate the chirping, and the low freq. rumble has gone. Wonder how long I've been driving with a bad VC? Only started chirping the tires a couple of days ago. I guess that would explain the off-road performance - perm. CDL :-)

So, should I just replace the VC, or find an LT230...hmmm

Why not Rob? All you gotta do is swap diffs. Takes about 2 hours.

2hr in the garage, what if you are stuck in BFE...

let's say you are out wheeling one day and your junk just seem to have the funk it used to for getting over what it has to. you're VC is probably dying.

in order to get over what's in front of you, you might decide to throw down the hammer, just this one time to save face in front of the boys because you dont want to here them rag about how the VC is bitch compared to the LT230.

this one time hammering decides to blow your diff or axel or CV and you forgot to carry with you whatever part just blew out. you are stuck.

if you are in and open diff truck and the VC goes out and you have eitehr front or rear axel snap ort diff blow out you are stuck. it is one of those reliability issues, thats all i am saying.

murphys law would apply nicely.

with the LT230 it's just less likely to leave you stranded.

i personlly love the VC on the range rover, in the snow it's the best.

just some food for thought.

So, what's the difference in the LT230R and the LT230T?

this is going to be my next TC: Maxi-Drive LT230RC (Rock Crawler)from GBR. Keep the 3.54 gears for the highway and the lower gearing for off-highway coupled with the current auto box.

pretty sure this is what Ed is also referencing.

I get it, R = rolling bearings, T = tapered bearings.
